FPU Steals One from BU

The Eagles were unable to hold onto an early lead in game one on Saturday.

LA MIRADA --- Biola (20-22, 17-18 PacWest) and Fresno Pacific (20-26, 15-24 PacWest) were back at it on Eagles Diamond on Saturday afternoon for another PacWest doubleheader. The game looked to continue the trend from Friday with Biola in control but the Sunbirds responded and snuck away with game one on the day with a 10-8 scoreline.

The first at bat of the day for the Biola squad showed promise with a gem from Noah Ruiz. The third baseman opened the game with a leadoff home run in the first inning, marking his ninth homer of the season.

The offense kept chugging along with a four-spot in the second frame. Two hits, two walks, and two FPU errors helped the BU lead to five through two innings. Tommy Kendlinger and Ruiz came through with RBI singles in the at bat.

The two teams traded blows in the third frame with two runs apiece. James Whitman offered his third home run in the series against FPU, leading off the bottom of the third with the bomb to center field. Ty Cowley singled to keep things moving, before moving to second on a wild pitch. Kendlinger delivered once again for the Eagles, bringing in Cowley with another RBI single.

After a sizzling start, the Eagles offense stalled. A 7-2 lead slowly dwindled with the Sunbirds inching back.

Three runs between the fourth and fifth frames moved the visitors within two with plenty of time left. FPU made its big move in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs. A hit by pitch and single brought home three runs, as the Sunbirds took the lead. Two more runs in the eighth helped the visitors to a three-run lead at 10-7.

The Eagles were held off the scoreboard for five frames, leaving work to be done in the bottom of the ninth. Ruiz kicked off the frame with a double to left-center, bringing energy to the dugout. Back-to-back outs helped Ruiz across home plate but left the bases empty with two outs and two runs needed for the tie. The third out came with no more damage done for the 10-8 final.

Ruiz offered a strong day at the plate, going 3-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. He added two extra-base hits with a double and a home run to lead the offense.

Despite drawing the loss, Blake Wentz tossed a strong effort in relief. The righty logged two innings on the mound without allowing a hit or an earned run. John Iacono took the rubber in the ninth and pitched a scoreless frame for BU.

The Eagles will wrap the four-game series with Fresno Pacific on Saturday afternoon with the final installment beginning around 3:15 pm.
