Eagles Power Past Bobcats

Veralie Naranjo’s seven goals and a second quarter shutout powered the Biola women’s water polo team to a 19-8 victory over UC Merced to cap their weekend road trip.

MERCED, Calif. --- A second quarter shutout and seven goals from Veralie Naranjo led the Biola Eagles (6-14) to a big 19-8 win over the UC Merced Bobcats (4-19) to end their weekend road trip up north in victory fashion.

Lizzy Birch got off to a quick start, finding the back of the net in the first minute of the game. The Eagles and Bobcats held each other scoreless for the next five minutes of the first quarter before UC Merced put up back-to-back goals in the late first frame to take a 2-1 lead. Stephanie Rodriguez fired one in to tie the game at two a piece after the first quarter.

The Eagles owned the second quarter as they scored five consecutive unanswered goals throughout the second frame. Alyssa Cuevas, Destiny Moreno, and Annabella Rapp each fired one past the goalkeeper while Naranjo found the back of the net twice. Thanks to the Eagles' shutout, Biola led 7-2 going into the half.

Biola found a way to match their second quarter outcome and put up another five goals in the third. Naranjo scored another two goals, while Moreno and Rodriguez each tallied their second of the day. The Bobcats fought back after the half, but Biola still maintained a strong 12-6 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Eagles continued on to score seven more in the fourth quarter while holding UC Merced to only two goals. Gwendolyn Pidd, Ava LoBue, and Katie Webb each found their way to the back of the net for their first of the day and Rodriguez and Rapp tallied on two more for Biola. To no surprise, Naranjo put up another pair of goals, leading Biola to a big 18-9 victory.

Naranjo had a big day in the pool with her seven goals, one assist, one steal and two drawn exclusions. LoBue played a big part in the Eagles victory with her five assists along with a goal. Rodriguez also contributed to Biola's offense with her first hat trick of the season.

In the goal, Alicia Fregoso and Chloe McKay split the game and recorded five saves.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, April 2nd at 1 pm as they take on CSU Monterey Bay at Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center.
