Defense Wins the Day

Biola offered its best defensive showing of 2025, locking up the No. 1 seed in the west by defeating CSUMB.

LA MIRADA --- The second round of WWPA regular season play continued on Wednesday afternoon at the Splash Regional Aquatics Center. Biola (7-14, 3-0 WWPA)hosted Cal State Monterey Bay (6-17, 1-2 WWPA) and found success in the second half for a 9-6 win.

The win for the Eagles gave the team the No. 1 seed in the west region for the upcoming WWPA Tournament set for April 25-27 in West Virginia.

Biola's defense was the highlight with only six goals allowed through the 32 minute bout. It was the lowest goals given up for the team so far through the 2025 season.

Alicia Fregoso was a huge part of the defensive effort, drawing the start in the cage. The BU keeper nabbed nine saves on the day on 15 shots on goal.

The press from the Eagles worked wonders on Wednesday. It took the Otters over six minutes to find the back of the net, as Biola held CSUMB scoreless for nearly 15 minutes of game action dating back to their previous bout this year. The BU defense went on to allow just two goals for the whole first half.

On the other end of the pool, Biola did not have much more going on offense. After scoring on the first possession of the game, the Eagles slowed and also tallied just two goals in the first half, leaving the two teams knotted on the scoreboard at the half.

The slow scoring continued in the second half with the two teams remaining locked at two through four and a half minutes of the third quarter. The otters finally broke the silence and captured their first lead of the game at 3-2.

Biola struck with three minutes to go in the third. On the next possession after CSUMB took the lead, Myah Ibarra grabbed her second goal of the game to tie the game at three.

A minute later, Biola was back in control as Stephanie Rodriguez capitalized on a power play. The good times continued to roll with two more goals before the end of the third. The Eagles turned a 3-2 deficit to a 6-3 lead in a three-minute span.

CSUMB got one goal back at the top of the fourth but Biola broke away behind the arm of Veralie Naranjo. The senior netted back-to-back power play goals, before Destiny Moreno found one more goal for a big 9-4 BU advantage.

The visitors rounded out the game with two goals but it was too much to overcome, as Biola sealed the win at 9-6.

Naranjo notched five points on Wednesday, going for three goals and two assists to lead the offense. Myah Ibarra and Christina Cervantaves were not far behind, logging three points each.

The Eagles will be back at home on Friday, finishing their regular season conference play against Fresno Pacific at 1:00 pm.
