The One that Got Away

Saturday’s doubleheader in Azusa began with a tough one, as the Eagles narrowly missed.

AZUSA, Calif. --- Game one on Saturday was a different pace from Friday with quick outs and dominant pitching for a low-scoring affair. Home runs stunned Biola (12-14, 9-10 PacWest) in the contest, as Azusa Pacific (13-14, 11-10 PacWest) escaped with a 3-2 win over the Eagles.

Andrew Zittel was dealing for Biola on Saturday. The big lefty took care of business against a lethal APU lineup, going scoreless through five frames. He went three-up, three-down in three of those five innings.

The only edge that the Cougars could muster against Zittel was the long ball. In the sixth inning, two runners on base threatened with nobody out. Zittel drew a grounder up the middle for an easy double play. With two outs and a runner on third, APU hit big with a two-run shot, which tied the game. The next inning saw a solo shot that gave the Cougars the lead for good at 3-2.

Zittel ended his outing with seven innings pitched and three runs allowed, five hits allowed, and six strikeouts.

The Biola bats were hard at work in the early going but outs on the base path spoiled the momentum. Four big outs on the base path spurned offensive rallies, leading to 11 BU hits but only two runs.

Those two scores came in the second frame for the Eagles. Nick Madole placed the ball right down the third base line and nabbed a double, while scoring Tommy Kendlinger. Josh McAninch came home next off a sacrifice fly to the fence from Noah Ruiz.

Kendlinger, Isaiah Leon, and James Whitman put together nice games at the plate with each landing two singles.

Game two is set for 4:00 pm in Azusa, California. Follow along with live stats here and live video here.
