What a Series

Biola and Azusa Pacific lived up to the Cornerstone Cup Rivalry, as the two teams split the series with an incredible win from Biola in game four.

AZUSA, Calif. --- The final installment of the Biola, Azusa Pacific (13-15, 11-11 PacWest) baseball classic personified the series with an intense battle from start to finish. The Eagles delivered in game two on Saturday, as Noah Ruiz provided the big hit for a 9-6 Biola (13-14, 10-10 PacWest) win.

Through four games this weekend, Biola and Azusa Pacific were only separated by one run with BU favored, 33-32.

The top of game two saw more good contact from the Biola lineup. Four singles helped churn out two runs, as Biola jumped ahead in the first inning.

John Iacono put in solid work on the mound. He retired the first five batters he faced and made it through two frames without a run allowed.

Azusa Pacific finally struck in the bottom of the third. An error put a runner on and a home run followed, knotting the game at two apiece.

Through four frames, the Eagles boasted seven singles and eight total hits. The one extra-base hit was a home run from Josh McAninch. The BU catcher launched the ball over the left field fence and handed Biola an edge on the scoreboard at 3-2 with his first home run as an Eagle.

In the next half inning, the Cougars battled back with two outs. The Eagles struggled to throw strikes, as APU tied the game at three without recording a hit. Three walks, a hit-by-pitch, and a wild pitch helped the first run across but APU still had the bases loaded with two outs. A seeing-eye single brought home two more, as the host squad took control with a 5-3 advantage.

The Eagles bounced back in the fifth to make a game of it. Luke Caruso led off with a base hit and moved to second with a Tommy Kendlinger hit-by-pitch. McAninch stayed hot with a single to right field and the bases were loaded with one out. The Cougars mishandled the next hit and Biola moved within one at 5-4.

Biola was not done, still boasting bases loaded with one down. A strikeout followed though, which brought up Isaiah Leon. The right fielder hit the ball back up the middle and past the pitcher to move the runners station-to-station and tie the game at five with a single.

APU responded and retook the lead in the fifth, loading the bases with no one out. Dylan Alanis was handed the ball in the dangerous situation, notching three-straight outs, as APU only nabbed one run with a sac fly.

A quiet sixth frame left the Eagles down by one going into the seventh.

Ty Cowley pinch hit to lead off the final opportunity and drew a walk to get things started. A sac bunt followed, before a walk put runners on first and second for Noah Ruiz. The leadoff hitter for Biola did not waste time and swung at the first pitch he saw. The hit left the ballpark and three runs came home on the account of his home run. The Eagles went back-to-back, as Isaiah Leon homered for two-straight BU long balls.

A four-run seventh made for a 9-6 Biola lead with three outs to go.

Alanis still had control of the ball and was sent out with a mission of securing the win. The junior got the third out without any impact on the scoreboard with the help of a leaping grab in right field by Cole Thomson.

Alanis scored the win for his second of 2025.

Ruiz and Leon paced the squad at the top end of the lineup, combining for five hits and five RBI.

The Eagles will be back in action on the road against Vanguard on Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
