Getting Ready for the Gauntlet

NCAA DII West Regionals are here and Biola is ready to hoop.

March 13, 2025

SAN DIEGO --- Biola Men's Basketball is dancing and is all set for an opening round matchup in the NCAA Division II West Region Championships. The team's first game of the tournament is around the corner on Friday at 7:30 pm, as No. 4 seed Biola is scheduled to take on the No. 5 seed Cal State San Bernardino.

The Biola squad does not have far to travel, driving down to San Diego, as Point Loma will play host for the west regional.

Biola is hoping to add to an impressive season with 22 wins and seven losses. The team surpassed its previous best record since transitioning to the NCAA DII with the help of an 11-game winning streak at the end of the regular season.

The last time the Eagles took the court was in the PacWest Tournament. Unfortunately, the semifinals held heartbreak for Biola, as an ART U buzzer beater kept the team from advancing to the championship game.

CSUSB posted a 22-11 mark through the 2024-25 campaign. The Yotes also fell in the semifinals, coming up short against Chico State in the CCAA Tournament.

Biola and Cal State San Bernardino have already battled on the court this season, facing off in the Eagles' third game of the year.

Davian Brown thrived in the previous matchup against the Yotes, hitting five field goals and six free throws for 18 points. Casey Cappo was not far behind, netting 15 points and leading the team on the glass with eight boards.

Stout defense from the Eagles kept it close in the November matchup, holding CSUSB to 23.5 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The final free throw sequence ended a nail-biter, as the Yotes gave BU its first loss of the season.

In a rematch on Friday, the BU squad will look to rely on its starting five to get the job done. Three of those in the starting lineup boast postseason accolades, including Davian Brown as Second Team All-PacWest and Newcomer of the Year, Daniel Esparza as First Team All-PacWest, and Casey Cappo as First Team All-PacWest and D2CCA Second Team All-West Region.

Friday's matchup between the Eagles and Yotes will be at 7:30 pm in Golden Gym on Point Loma's campus, as the fourth and final west regional game of the day.

With a win on Friday, the Eagles would be slated to play the winner of top-seeded Point Loma and eighth-seeded Seattle Pacific on Saturday night.
