Rooting for the Home Team

Biola baseball found its groove on Saturday, blowing up for 10 runs and defeating Cal State LA.

LA MIRADA --- Biola (1-4) hit the winning column on Saturday with an outburst in game one against Cal State LA (2-2). The runs kept coming in a stellar 10-2 victory over the visiting Golden Eagles.

The offensive showing was a welcome sight, as the BU squad outdid their run total from its entire four-game series against Northwest Nazarene in game one against CSULA.

Two two-run home runs highlighted the day. Sam Lisiak gave the Eagles the early lead with his long ball in the third inning. His hit put BU ahead, 3-1, bringing home Noah Ruiz as well.

Luke Caruso provided the other big hit, leaving the park for the first time as an Eagle. The sophomore blasted his first collegiate homer in the bottom of the seventh, giving a bigger cushion to BU's lead.

The game began evenly with each team plating one in the first. BU's starter Luke Ballantyne worked through a tough bases loaded jam to escape the first with one run allowed. The BU offense took advantage of an error and attacked with two outs to match CSULA at one.

Lisiak made the difference in the third, knocking the ball out of the park on a 0-2 count.

Both offenses went quiet until the seventh, as the Eagles added to their lead. Tommy Kendlinger led off the at bat with a bunt single and Ruiz followed up with a double to the right field fence. Ty Cowley scored Kendlinger with a groundout, before Caruso cleared the bases for a 6-1 Biola edge.

CSULA threatened in the eighth, putting runners on each base with just one out. The only run to come across scored via a passed ball, as Jack O'Brasky closed out the top of the eighth with the Eagles still leading, 6-2.

Biola closed the door in the bottom of the eighth. The offense kept rolling, beginning with a leadoff double by Jonny Tewinkle. Three walks aided the BU cause, while Caruso added the finishing touch with a two-RBI single to left field.

The 10-2 lead was too much and Biola capped off the win with Dylan Alanis collecting the final three outs on the mound.

Ballantyne scored the win on the mound with five innings pitched and one run allowed. The freshman found his first collegiate win, while collecting five strikeouts. Another lefty helped in relief, as Andrew Zittel posted two scoreless frames with two strikeouts.

The middle of the lineup was red-hot in game one, as Ruiz, Lisiak, and Caruso each logged multiple hits. Ruiz went 3-5 with a double and an RBI, Lisiak went 2-2 with two-RBI, and Caruso went 3-4 with five RBI.
