Sprinting Through the Mid Game

The middle 16 minutes was won by the Eagles, despite a loss to No. 19 UC Santa Barbara.

CLAREMONT, Calif. --- The Biola women's water polo squad took the fight to No. 19 UC Santa Barbara on Friday afternoon in the Claremont Convergence. The second game of the day for the Eagles featured tough first and fourth quarters but a winning second and third periods kept BU within range. The Gauchos pulled out the win against BU with a 14-7 final.

UCSB got hot in the opening period, tacking on seven scores in the first eight minutes. The two teams traded goals in the first two minutes with Veralie Naranjo delivering in a power play scenario. One more goal from Naranjo put the Eagles at two through one quarter, while trailing by five.

The Biola defense was stout in the second quarter, stepping up against the Gauchos. The final six minutes of the second quarter went by without UCSB impacting the scoreboard. The scoreless stretch was matched by two goals from the Eagles, cutting into the deficit going into the break.

The third stanza saw continued strong play on the defensive end for BU. Two scores came across for UCSB but both came on five-meter penalty shots. The Eagles also added two goals in the third quarter, as the Biola squad outpaced the Gauchos through the middle two quarters, 4-3.

Down by four entering the fourth, Biola still had its work cut out for them but the Gauchos were ready. UCSB closed the door with four-unanswered goals to start the fourth.

Naranjo and Annabella Rapp each reached two goals on Friday. Naranjo posted her seventh-straight game with a goal and totaled three points, adding an assist against UCSB. Rapp scored her first goals in a Biola cap since transferring in this year.

Ava LoBue did a little bit of everything, recording one goal, one assist, and one sprint win. Salma Orozco also impacted the scoreboard with a goal on Friday.

The Eagles will be back in action at the Claremont Convergence on Saturday, taking on CSU Fullerton at 9:00 am.
