Game Recap: Women's Water Polo | | Ethan McGarvey, Sports Information Director

Finding Their Form

Biola Women’s Water Polo bounced back from heartbreak on Saturday morning to return to the winning column against Whittier.

CLAREMONT, Calif. --- The Eagles put together a pair of strong performances on Saturday, rounding out the Claremont Convergence. A heartbreaking 12-11 sudden death loss to CSU Fullerton did not keep the team down, as the Biola squad returned for a dominant 17-9 showing versus the Whittier Poets.

BIOLA vs CSU FULLERTON
It took nine periods to determine a winner between CSU Fullerton and Biola. The two teams were perfectly matched, leading to two overtime periods and three sudden death periods.

Biola was quick to strike, taking a commanding lead. The first three goals went to the Eagles, as the team went up, 4-1 through one quarter. Four different Eagles notched a goal with three even strength and one five-meter penalty.

The impressive pace continued into the second quarter, as Biola extended its lead. Two more unique Eagles found the back of the net for a five-goal BU advantage.

Two Biola exclusions led to two CSU Fullerton goals before halftime, setting up a 6-3 scoreline at the break.

The two teams traded goals in the first minute of the third but then the Eagles gained separation with goals on back-to-back possessions. Veralie Naranjo and Annabella Rapp scored consecutively to boost the BU advantage to 9-4.

The Titans responded going into the fourth and found a way back into the game. CSU Fullerton corralled the final goal of the third and first goal of the fourth, before Naranjo netted a goal on a power play to keep BU up by three. With under two minutes to go, the Titans battled back and posted three-unanswered goals to force overtime.

Overtime was a tough, defensive battle with no goals for over 12 minutes of game time. The third sudden death period brought the finish, as CSU Fullerton found the game-winner.

Naranjo and Anabella Rapp went for three goals, while Ava LoBue, Stephanie Rodriguez, Mia Mulhall, Marissa Brock, and Gwendolyn Pidd also dented the twine. Naranjo paced the team with two assists, as well, totaling five points.

BIOLA vs WHITTIER
The Eagle offense erupted in the second game of the day for a comfortable win over the Whittier Poets.

Similar to game one, Biola got off to a hot start, finding goals early and often. The first five goals went the way of Biola with all five coming in 6-on-6 situations. Stephanie Rodriguez and Destiny Moreno got going in the first quarter with two goals apiece.

The Eagles kept the pedal to the metal, collecting 10 goals in the first two quarters. The Biola squad set up a strong attack to give the team a six-goal lead at halftime. Through 16 minutes, three Eagles already notched multiple goals.

Nothing could stop BU, as the team piled on six more goals in the third quarter. The second six goal stanza for the Eagles put the game out of reach and helped the squad to a 17-9 route.

Everybody got in on the action with 12 Eagles recording at least one goal or assist.

Clara McKee went to work in the cage, logging all 32 minutes. The freshman grabbed seven saves on the way to the win.

Moreno capped off the game with three goals and added an assist for four points. Devon Coppes and Gwendolyn Pidd each also tallied four points with Coppes netting one goal and three assists and Pidd posting four goals for a team-high.

The Eagles will see their first action at home next week, hosting Saint Francis on Friday at 1:00 pm.
