BU Loses Nail-Biter to APU

The Biola women’s basketball team lost a 62-61 nail-biter to Azusa Pacific at the Felix Event Center.

AZUSA, Calif.---The Biola women's basketball team lost a 62-61 nail-biter to Azusa Pacific at the Felix Event Center. 

The Eagles and Cougars battled through the first half. Despite a great effort by Biola, APU managed to hold onto a five-point lead headed  into the halftime break.

Biola regrouped during halftime and responded with their best offensive showing of the game, out-scoring the Cougars 19-12. Jessa Thurman led BU's offense with seven points. Sammie Henley contributed five points, Laila Walker posted four and Sydney Moran scored a trey.

Biola's sharp shooting allowed them to seize the lead by the end of the frame. Moran tied the game up at 40-40 with a basket downtown and then the Eagles went on a four-point run (44-40). 

Azusa Pacific took back the lead, scoring five points which allowed them to lead by one (45-44). Before the third quarter concluded, Henley would steal the lead back for BU. The Graduate Student downed a three with 24 seconds remaining to give her team a two-point lead going into the final frame.

The intensity would continue into the fourth quarter. The game was tied up twice and the lead would be swapped five times before APU took the 62-61 win.

Azusa Pacific tied up the game by scoring the first basket of the fourth (47-47) and the Cougars built a three-point lead (50-47). Kaylen Kamelamela cut the Cougars' lead down to one (50-49), before APU would extend their advantage back to three (52-49).

Moran would respond for the Eagles, making a three-point basket that tied up the game (52-52). BU then went on a five-point run which gave them a  five-point lead (57-52). 

With 3:42 left in regulation, Azusa Pacific had some time to come back and scored the next four points from free throws (57-56). Thurman gave BU some cushion again, extending the Eagles' lead to three points with a layup (59-56).

APU charged back, scoring the next three points which gave them a one-point advantage (60-59).
The Eagles still had some fight, Kamelamela made a jumper with six seconds remaining to put Biola ahead 61-60.

The Cougars ended up clawing their way back, making the final basket of the game with two seconds remaining (62-61).
 
Moran led BU's scoring off the bench. The Senior made four three-pointers which gave her 12 points. Two other Eagles scored in the double-digits. Thurman recorded 11 points and Henley had 10.

Next up for the Biola women's basketball team is the PacWest Conference Championships in San Rafael, California. The conference championship begins on Thursday, March 6th.
