Naranjo Records Hat Trick Against #1 USC

Veralie Naranjo records a hat trick in BU’s 30-5 loss against the nationally ranked USC Trojans.

Irvine, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles (1-7) kicked off the weekend at the UCI Barbara Kalbus Invite taking on the undefeated #1 team in the nation, USC Trojans (12-0) for the third time of the 2025 season. Although the game ended in the Trojans' favor, Veralie Naranjo and the Eagles found the back of the net five times in the first match up of the weekend.

USC put up a goal in the first 30 seconds of the game, but Naranjo was quick to fire back and begin her hat trick journey. The Trojans went on to score 10 unanswered goals before Ava LoBue lobbed one to the back of the net in the seventh minute of the second period.

The Trojans ended the first half and opened up the second half going on another run of over ten unanswered goals. With three minutes left in the third period, Naranjo found the back of the net again, putting up the third Eagles goal of the day.

In the fourth frame, Mia Mulhall and Naranjo fired in back-to-back goals, completing Naranjo's fourth hat trick of the season. USC continued to have a day in the net resulting in a 30-5 final score.

LoBue and Mulhall each recorded an assist along with their goal to help keep the Eagles on the board against the undefeated Trojans. Naranjo also picked up an assist along with three goals for her 37th career hat trick.

Alicia Fregoso got the start in the net, then Chloe McKay and Clara McKee split the second half in the net. All three goalies contributed to BU's five saves on the day.

The Eagles will be back in the pool tomorrow, Saturday, February 22 at 8 a.m. against the loser of the Long Beach State and Arizona State game.
