Tactical Third

The Eagles won the third quarter on Saturday, as the team took on another top-10 opponent.

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. --- Biola jumped into the pool early in the morning on Saturday, taking on No. 10 Arizona State in the second round of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. The Eagles impressed in the second half on Saturday but came up short in the upset bid, 16-9.

Nine games into the 2025 season and Biola faced its seventh ranked foe and sixth top-10 ranked opponent. A stacked Barbara Kalbus Invitational has the Eagles in a tournament with 14 DI programs.

The opening match of Saturday at Corona Del Mar High School saw the Eagles take on the Sun Devils of Arizona State. The two teams battled for the second time this season with ASU taking the first matchup nearly a month ago.

The first lead of the morning went to Biola, as Veralie Naranjo dented the twine. The opening possession for the Eagles resulted in a power play score and a 1-0 lead.

ASU found the equalizer a minute later and maintained the pressure through the rest of the first half. Nine-straight goals went the way of the Sun Devils for a 9-1 margin at the halftime break.

The Biola squad collected themselves and put together an impressive third quarter. The BU offense got going with three scores in the first two minutes and change of the second half. Alyssa Cuevas led things off with an even strength score, before Mia Mulhall and Naranjo cashed in power play goals.

The flurry of goals continued halfway through the third with Biola finding the back of the net on three-consecutive possessions. Naranjo stayed hot with two goals in a minute, while Mulhall added her second goal of the game.

Ultimately, the Eagles piled on eight goals in the third quarter alone. An eight-goal deficit was cut in half with eight minutes to play.

Unfortunately, the offense for Biola was stalled in the fourth quarter, leading to the 16-9 final.

Naranjo continued her strong offensive play, going for five goals on Saturday, following a three-goal performance on Friday. On the year, Naranjo has five hat tricks and two games with five goals. She tacked on three assists to add to her day, posting eight points.

Mulhall recorded a pair of goals for Biola, while Cuevas and Stephanie Rodriguez added the final two.

Chloe McKay and Alicia Fregoso split the responsibilities in the cage, collecting a combined 10 saves.

Biola will now battle UC Santa Barbara at 1:20 pm on Saturday at Corona Del Mar High School.
