Late Push Not Enough to Overcome CUI

The women’s basketball team had a fourth quarter push but it wouldn’t be enough to overcome Concordia University Irvine in their eventual 56-49 loss.

IRVINE, Calif.---The Biola women's basketball team had a fourth quarter push but it wouldn't be enough to overcome Concordia University Irvine in their eventual 56-49 loss.

The Eagles began the fourth quarter chasing the Golden Eagles by 18 points, but would go on to outscore CUI 19-8 in the final frame. 

Biola's best offensive quarter was led by Jamelia Coleman who recorded six points. Coleman's six points were from two three-pointers that were scored in the final minute. Sydney Moran scored the second-most points, tallying five. Behind Moran was Laila Walker (4), Sammie Henley (2) and Jessa Thurman (2).

The Eagles' strong fourth quarter showing allowed them to cut CUI's advantage down to seven points by the end of the game. Coleman downed the final bucket of the game with three seconds remaining in BU's 56-49 loss.

Henley was Biola's leading scorer against CUI, scoring 12 points. The redshirt-Senior also was tied with a team-high of six rebounds with Thurman. Henley added four steals and three assists to an impressive stat sheet.

Thurman had the second-most points, recording 10.

Biola falls 7-18 overall and 7-10 in the PacWest Conference while CUI improved 4-18 and 3-12 in the conference. 

Next up for the Eagles is Vanguard on Saturday, February 15 at 5:30 p.m. at Chase Gymnasium.
