Eagles Show Late Fight, Not Enough to Overcome APU

The women’s basketball team faced a tough challenge against nationally-ranked No. 18 Azusa Pacific. The Eagles put forth a valiant effort, but ended up falling 65-44 at Chase Gymnasium.

LA MIRADA---The Biola women's basketball team faced a tough challenge against nationally-ranked No. 18 Azusa Pacific. The Eagles put forth a valiant effort, but ended up falling 65-44 at Chase Gymnasium.

The Eagles had a slow start and headed into the halftime break with a 34-13 deficit.

Biola regrouped during the break and came back to win the third quarter. BU out-scored APU 13-9 with Kaylen Kamelamela leading the charge with five points. 

Despite a great effort, the Eagles still trailed Azusa Pacific by 17 heading into the fourth (43-26).

Biola had their best offensive showing in the fourth quarter, posting 18 points. BU had a balanced scoring effort with seven Eagles scoring baskets. Jaya Michel led the effort with four points and Sammie Henley and Jamelia Coleman both downed three-pointers.

The Eagles' successful offensive effort was answered by the Cougars who managed to out-score them 22-18 in the fourth and Azusa Pacific ended the night with a 65-44 win over BU.

Jessa Thurman led the Eagles with nine points and Laila Walker led BU with seven rebounds.

Alyssa Kubo recorded a career-high of four steals against APU.

Biola fell 7-15 overall and 7-7 in the PacWest Conference while APU improved 18-3 and 12-2 in the PacWest.

Biola plays next on Thursday, February 6 at 5:30 p.m. at Menlo.
