Goldsmith Leads Eagles Up North

The Eagles displayed great resilience on the road on Thursday, nearly taking down the Oaks.

ATHERTON, Calif. --- The first PacWest matchup between Biola and Menlo was a doozy on Thursday night. The game was up in the air all the way until the final ticks of the clock and despite late leads, the Eagles (7-16, 7-8 PacWest) were unable to close out, falling 54-52 to the Oaks (12-9, 8-6 PacWest).

Biola showed incredible fight on Thursday, overcoming a four-point first quarter to make for a competitive game. The opening period saw just two makes from the Eagles, who totaled four points and a 16.7 field goal percentage through the first 10 minutes of the game.

The second quarter saw a very different offense for Biola. The team sank eight field goals on 12 attempts for 18 points in the stanza. A return to form helped the Eagles cut into the Menlo advantage, going into the halftime break down by three.

BU took advantage of the break and came out of the gates on fire in the second half. After Menlo scored the opening bucket of the third, the Eagles piled on 12-straight unanswered points. BU held the Oaks scoreless for three minutes, while going 5-7 from the field with two threes to burst ahead, 34-27.

Menlo stopped the Biola surge and returned with its own push to end the quarter. Before the start of the fourth, the host squad regained control and owned a 44-43 lead.

Defense dominated the fourth quarter with both teams shooting under 30.0 percent from the field and a combined 19 points between the two squads.

Both teams had the lead for three minutes of the fourth and the game was a one-possession difference throughout all 10 minutes of the final stanza. With a minute to go the Oaks took the lead with a pair of free throws, which would stick through the final buzzer.

Off the bench, Jaycee Goldsmith delivered in a big way with her first career double-double. For just the second time this season, she grabbed double-digit rebounds with 12 on Thursday and added 10 points on four field goals and two triples. Goldsmith also led the team in assists, dishing out six.

Laila Walker logged all 40 minutes on the court, tallying 11 points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Biola will stay in Northern California for its next contest, facing Dominican on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
