Game Recap: Volleyball |

Mahalo, O‘ahu!

Biola sweeps Hawaii Pacific to complete unblemished Hawaii trip.

HONOLULU, Hawaii — Aloha Friday turned into a Mahalo Saturday as Biola Volleyball kept the vibes high on day two of its Hawaiian road trip. The Eagles conquered Oahu, winning in dominant fashion for the second consecutive night against a PacWest Conference Hawaiian foe. They will return from the 50th state in the union with nothing but smiles.

The Eagles took down highly-favored Chaminade on Friday and then brought out the brooms to sweep Hawaii Pacific on Saturday night, moving to 2-0 this season agains the Sharks. The first and third sets were all Biola, but the second set made the BU team prove its worth in a bitter battle of sideouts that led to a 30-28 final set score.

Kendall Vandetuig, Hannah Hanson and Payton Tully paced the attack for Biola as each finished in double figures in the kills column. The tone for a solid attacking evening was set early on by Hanson, who loomed large with seven kills on just eight swings in set one. Her efforts helped Biola work a 25-22 win in the first stanza, which was one where both teams hit .300+.

Biola would end the three-set evening hitting .268 overall as a team, which is the team's third-best mark in a match this season. The Eagles' defense was also stingy throughout this contest, limiting the hosting Sharks to just 37 total kills while the offense put up 53 of their own. The 53 kills is five more than Biola has managed in any three-set match to this point on the season.

Vandertuig was the overall leader in successful attacks, finishing this one with 15 kills on a .250 clip. Hanson again had the most brilliant all-around match, ending the game with 13 kills, 19 assists, eight digs and even one service ace for good number.

The third set was the most straightforward for Head Coach Brian Failinger's side. His Eagles went back-and-forth with HPU early in the frame, even up until it was tied 13-13. However, Biola won 12 of the last 15 rallies to cruise to a closing 25-16 set win.

Tully had four of her 11 kills in set number three. She hit .364 in the match, matching Hannah Guzzetti and finishing only behind Hanson's sparkling .478 effort.

The win did count for PacWest Conference competition. The Eagles improved to 11-5 overall and 2-1 in league contests this season. Next up for BU is a pair of home matches this coming Friday and Saturday against Jessup (6-8, 1-2) and Dominican (1-15, 0-3). Both of those will also count toward the league standings.
