Eagles Extend Win Streak

Early dominance outlasted a third set surge

LA MIRADA — The Biola Volleyball Team came out swinging on Friday night, taking down the visiting Jessup Warriors in four sets (25-14, 25-14, 28-30, 25-16).

It was a complete team effort from start to finish. Biola started the match on an 8-2 run thanks to kills from Hannah Hanson, Kendall Vandertuig, and Payton Tully. Hanson also tacked on a service ace in that stretch.

After some back-and-forth scoring, a 5-1 Eagles run expanded their lead to 21-11, all but sealing the first set. Simi Kapustova, Vandertuig and Tully aided the run. Juliana Van Ommering and Hannah Guzzetti joined the attack, each adding two kills of their own.

Set two was deja vu for BU, taking it 25-14. It started with a Bethany Bellfi ace and ended with a Lexi Lambert ace. As a team, Biola served up seven aces in set two alone, 11 in total for the match. Van Ommering led the attack, bouncing five kills, while Vandertuig added three of her own. Guzzetti tacked on two more and Ashley Shumate recorded her first collegiate kill, inciting a frenzy of excitement from the Biola bench.

The third set was a thriller. The Eagles found themselves trailing big early, after the Warriors started the set on a 9-5 run. BU responded with a 6-2 run of their own to even the score at 11 all. The two teams traded points until Jessup found their stride on a later 7-1 run, giving them a 21-15 advantage.

The Eagles, however, refused to quit. Vandertuig and Van Ommering would aid a late Biola push that knotted the score at 24 all. The Eagles managed three match points in the frame, but could not convert to close out the sweep. When it was all said and done in that third stanza, the Warriors outlasted, taking it 30-28.

Behind kills from Vandertuig, Hanson, Tully, Van Ommering, Guzzetti and Kapustova, the Eagles handled business in a decisive fourth set.  Lambert would add another service ace to her stats, finishing with five overall. Guzzetti and Hanson would team up for a huge block, sealing the lead and momentum for BU. Biola would go on to win, 25-16.

As a team, the Eagles tallied 63 kills on a .304 hitting percentage. Hanson and Lambert kept the offense flowing, dishing out 27 and 23 assists, respectively. Defensively, Bri Bellfi led the way with 20 digs, while Hanson added 12 and Vandertuig chipped in with 11 of her own.

The win improves Biola to 3-1 in PacWest play. It is the team's third-straight victory and improves Biola to 8-1 inside Chase Gym in 2024.

Biola will look to improve this win streak tomorrow at 2 p.m. against the Dominican Penguins (1-16, 0-4 PacWest).
