Henley Downs Game-Winner in Overtime

Sammie Henley led the Biola women’s basketball team to a thrilling 63-60 overtime victory, downing the go-ahead basket over Jessup University.

LA MIRADA--- Sammie Henley led the Biola women's basketball team to a thrilling 63-60 overtime victory, downing the go-ahead basket over Jessup University.

Henley's leading basket came from beyond the arc to put BU up 62-59 with 1:20 remaining in the fifth period.

"Not much was going through my mind," shared Henley. "Just to get a bucket. We were tied the whole overtime and the main focus was to get a bucket and get a stop."

Which is exactly what happened as the Senior followed up her three-point basket with a crucial block on defense.

Four possessions later, the Warriors broke through with their first basket of the period. A successful free throw brought Jessup within two points (62-60) with just 11 seconds left.

Biola stood firm in the pressure. Jaycee Goldsmith made the final basket of the game, sealing the Eagles' victory at 63-60.

"Our team really battled today," stated head coach Mike Simonson. "Jessup has tremendous heart and we talked about how we need to be the aggressors and match that energy. Today we had multiple players step up. Obviously Jaycee and Sammie scoring the ball but I am proud of the defensive adjustments we made down the stretch to win a close game."

Three Eagles scored double-digits against the Warriors. Goldsmith led the charge with 19 points. Henley ended the game with 17 and Laila Walker posted 10.

Jessa Thurman was just shy of a double-double. The Junior had a game-high of 11 rebounds and scored eight points.

Simonson closed, "We gained a ton of experience this week and now it is time to let it keep building into next week in Hawaii."

Biola improved 3-11 overall and 3-3 in the PacWest Conference while Jessup fell 7-8 and 2-4.

The Eagles' next game is Thursday at 7:30 p.m. PT (5:30 p.m. HT) at Chaminade in Honolulu, Hawaii.
