BU Falls in Tough Matchup

The women’s basketball team put up a fight against Westmont College but would end up falling 70-49 at the Murchison Gymnasium.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.---The Biola women's basketball team put up a fight against Westmont College but would end up falling 70-49 at the Murchison Gymnasium.

The Eagles and Warriors battled through a competitive first half that ended with Westmont taking a 29-26 lead. Westmont led Biola by five heading into the second quarter which would be shaved down to three by the Eagles by end of the second.

Biola came into the second quarter ready to fight and executed their best offensive quarter of the game. BU out-scored Westmont 16-14 with Alyssa Kubo leading the scoring effort with eight points.

Biola held the lead twice in the second frame. Alyssa Kubo put BU ahead 20-17 at 7:05 and Laila Walker gave BU a 23-22 advantage at 5:05.

The halftime break proved favorable to Westmont who would go on to out-score Biola 41-23. The Warriors built up as much as a 23-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Kubo was Biola's leading scorer with 13 points. The redshirt sophomore went 3-for-6 beyond the arc and 5-for-11 in the field. Jessa Thurman also scored double-digits points (12).

Jaycee Goldsmith led BU on the boards, collecting six. Thurman was close behind with five rebounds. Goldsmith and Thurman each had a block against Westmont.

The Eagles will regroup and get ready for their next game on Saturday, February 1 at 5:30 p.m. against Azusa Pacific at Chase Gymnasium.
