A Dub to Begin the New Year

The women’s basketball team opened 2025 with a 66-46 victory over Academy of Art at Chase Gymnasium.

LA MIRADA---The Biola women's basketball team opened 2025 with a 66-46 victory over Academy of Art at Chase Gymnasium.

"I am really proud of our team," stated head coach Mike Simonson. "Tonight we played Biola basketball against a scrappy team. Academy of Art can make you second guess on offense and they are hard to guard."

Simonson continued, "We played tough defense and really shared the ball. Nineteen assists on offense and forcing 19 turnovers on defense really showed. We are finally back healthy and at full strength. Our practices were great this week and it showed in our game. Excited to build on this conference win."

Laila Walker and Jessa Thurman shined against the Urban Knights, leading Biola's offensive attack with 18 points a piece. The pair went 7-for-13, ending the night with a 53.8 percent shooting percentage.

Thurman recorded her  second-consecutive 18-point game and collected six rebounds against ART U. Walker added five assists, five rebounds and two steals to her stat sheet against ART U.

"It was a great win," exclaimed Walker. "We came back from the break with a clean slate mentality. We just wanted to get a dub off that bat and we executed really well and I'm super proud of us."

The Eagles matched a great offensive performance with even better defense. Biola held ART U to 10.7 percent beyond the arc while they shot 38.7 and held their opponents to 30.2 percent in the field while they shot 40. BU forced Academy of Art to make 19 turnovers and went on to score 12 points from Urban Knight's mistakes.

Biola and Academy of Art traded leads three times during the first quarter, but the Eagles emerged ahead with a 22-16 advantage. From there, Biola seized control, steadily extending their lead to as much as 23 points by the fourth quarter. Although ART U managed to chip away at the deficit, the Eagles held firm and secured a dominant 20-point victory by the final buzzer (66-46).

Biola improved 2-11 and 2-3 in the PacWest Conference while ART U dropped to 7-5 and 1-4.
