Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Getting Closer

Biola keeps CSUF honest, falling to the Titans just 10-8.

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Contrary to its morning match, Biola Women's Water Polo worked its way through a very close, thrilling battle with NCAA Division I CSU Fullerton during its nightcap at the CSULB Mini Invite. The Titans would win 10-8 at the end, but Biola did not go down without a fight.

The Eagles and Titans matched each other goal for goal through most of the first three quarters until a streak of back-to-back-to-back goals from CSUF to start the third period bought them some momentary breathing room up 6-3.

Biola refused to roll over, answering back with two in a row of its own to close the third period down just one tally. Both of those late goals came from Veralie Naranjo, who led the scoring effort with a five-goal performance to open up her final year in red and black.

A Lizzy Birch shot one minute into the fourth period tied the game up at six and made it a race to the finish over the final seven minutes of play.

Just like earlier in the game, CSUF managed three unanswered goals in a row to get back into prime position with less than three minutes on the clock. Naranjo managed to score on back-to-back possessions to work BU back into it but it was too little, too late.

Naranjo and Stephanie Rodriguez end day one of the 2025 season with six points each to lead Biola's efforts on day one. Rodriguez had no goals against the Titans but did manage to set up three of BU's eight scores. She's been a huge part of setting up BU scores in the early stages of this year.

Alicia Fregoso is settling in nicely to her role as the starter for 2025, she had 12 saves and kept her team in it throughout this one with great blocks and even a steal. Biola improved from its opener, turning the ball over about half as much as against USC.

The loss drops Biola to 0-2 on the season and sets up another road trip for the Eagles for next week. A great team-building experience is coming right up for the Eagles as they fly to Hawaii next week for the invite at the University of Hawaii Manoa. They will face No. 13 Arizona State, No. 5 Hawaii and No. 10 Loyola Marymount.
