Eagles Cooled Off by Penguins

The women’s basketball team struggled to find a rhythm against Dominican, eventually losing 67-44 to the Penguins.

LA MIRADA---The Biola women's basketball team struggled to find a rhythm against Dominican, eventually losing 67-44 to the Penguins.

The Eagles (5-13, 5-5 PacWest) and Penguins (12-9, 6-4) shot similarly from the field, but Dominican had double their success beyond the arc. Dominican also had three players score double-digits while Biola had one. Kaylen Kamelamela led BU's scoring effort with 11 points and she was followed by Sammie Henley (8), Alyssa Kubo (7) and Jessa Thurman (7).

There wasn't a huge difference between the amount of turnovers committed by each team. Biola only had five more than Dominican but DU managed to score 21 points compared to the Eagles' five off turnovers.

The Eagles were also out-rebounded by the Penguins who collected 41 to BU's 34. Four Eagles led their team with five rebounds including Kamelamela, Thurman, Laila Walker, Jaycee Goldsmith.

Biola had a strong start, scoring the first four baskets to take a 4-0 lead. Thurman had the first jumper of the game and stretched the Eagles' lead to four with two good free throws.

The Penguins slowly worked their way back from behind and eventually tied the game up at 2:54 (12-12). The Penguins went on to score the next five baskets which gave them a nine-point lead heading into the second quarter.

Dominican kept Biola at arms distance for the rest of the game, growing their lead by 23 points in their 67-44 victory.

The Eagles play next on Thursday, January 23 at 5:30 p.m. against Chaminade at Chase Gymnasium.
