Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No More Hawaiian Blues

Biola shakes off a tough loss to Chaminade on their island with a big win on the mainland.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — A career-night for Syd the Shooter powered Biola Women's Basketball to its sixth PacWest Conference victory and third win in the pst four games. The Eagles were at home against Chaminade on Thursday night and Sydney Moran's 18-point outburst on 70 percent shooting lifted the Eagles to a 74-67 win.

The first quarter is what won the game for Biola as Head Coach Mike Simonson's group outscored the visiting Silverswords by double digits in the opening frame, staking a 22-11 lead after just 10 minutes.

Moran was a huge part of that early effort, scoring nine of her 18 points and adding a pair of assists to power the offense to the big lead out the gate. Biola scored the first five points of the contest and never once let Chaminade tie the game or take the lead in a steady effort.

"I feel amazing," said Sydney Moran. "I give credit to my teammates for finding me and trusting me to hit those shots. This is a big win for me mentally - going out and feeling like I can make shots."

The Eagles become the sixth team in the league to get to the six-win mark, improving to 6-5 overall in PacWest play. Over halfway into the conference schedule, the Eagles are beginning to position themselves well to knock on the door for a postseason berth this year.

Chaminade outscored Biola by a buck in both the second and third quarters, but the early lead was insurmountable for the visitors who were also in search of their sixth PacWest win of the 2024-25 campaign.

Overall Biola shot the ball a little worse than the Silverswords, but the team hit double figures for three-point makes with 10 and also were much more consistent at the free throw line than their counterparts. BU went 14-for-18 from the free-throw line in this one, which accounted for a new season high for free-throw makes in a game. It was also the team's second-best shooting percentage from the line in any game where they took 10 or more free throws.

Sammie Henley tied Moran with 18 points to help lead the team, while Alyssa Kubo also set a season-high for scoring with 16 points of her own. Kubo also set her season-best for minutes played and assists in helping lead the effort.

Kaylen Kamelamela was once again a force to be reckoned with. She ended just two points shy of a double-double as she stacked up 10 rebounds to go with eight points while shooting about 50 percent. It marks the second time this season that the grad student hit double digits on the boards.

"This win helps us build character. We talk a lot about that," said Moran. "It was a tough loss for us down in Hawaii. We wanted to focus on having high character and doing the little things right."

The win pushes Biola to 6-13 overall this season and 6-5 in league play. They are back at the friendly confines of Chase Gym on Saturday as they once again host a Hawaiian counterpart. They tip things off against Hawaii Pacific (7-8, 3-6 PacWest) at 5:30 p.m.
