Eagles Stay Hot, Hand PLNU First Conference Loss

The women’s basketball team rose to the challenge, coming back from behind to beat the PacWest Conference’s undefeated Point Loma 73-65.

LA MIRADA---The Biola women's basketball team rose to the challenge, coming back from behind to beat the PacWest Conference's undefeated Point Loma 73-65 at Chase Gymnasium.

Not only did the Eagles deliver the Sea Lions their first PacWest Conference loss, but they also snapped their 11-game winning streak.

"What a great win for our Biola Eagles," exclaimed head coach Mike Simonson. "We knocked off Point Loma who was in first place tonight and it was just a big program win."

Simonson continued, "We played some poor defense in the first half and we cleaned up some things in the second half and our defense really came together. Huge win for our team and we are excited to build on this one."

Four Eagles scored in the double-digits tonight including Sammie Henley, Laila Walker, Jaycee Goldsmith and Alyssa Kubo. Biola was led by Henley who posted a career-high of 21 points (8-for-13 in the field), collected three rebounds, two steals and one block.

Walker was BU's next-best shooter, recording 12 points and she was followed by Goldsmith and Kubo who both had 11.

"We worked really well as a team," shared Walker. "We practiced for this and everyone stepped up and that's how we got the win today."

The Eagles trailed the Sea Lions by eight heading into the halftime break (38-30) but would begin to turn things around in the third quarter.

BU out-scored PLNU 17-13 in the third quarter which trimmed their deficit down to four points as they entered the final frame.

The Eagles executed in the fourth, showcasing their grit by out-scoring PLNU 26-14. BU was led by Henley who posted seven points and she was followed by Walker (5), Alyssa Kubo (4), Kaylen Kamelamela (3), Goldsmith (3), Jessa Thurman (2) and Camden Miller (2).

Biola scored the first four baskets of the fourth which allowed them to take their first lead of the game. The Eagles' second basket tied up the game 51-51 and the third gave them a three-point lead (54-51). Henley downed the game-tying basket and Kamelamela put the Eagles ahead.

Biola held the advantage for the remainder of the game, building their lead up to eight points in their 73-65 victory.

Henley concluded, "We started the new year well, especially at home and it's only going up from here."

The Eagles improved 5-12 overall and 5-4 in the PacWest. BU plays next on Saturday, January 18th at 1 p.m. against Dominican at home!
