Game Recap: Men's Water Polo | | Ethan McGarvey, Sports Information Director

Eagles End Weekend With Win

The Navy Open saw stiff competition for BU but the Eagles exited opening weekend with a win on Sunday afternoon.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. --- Sunday featured a pair of contests for Biola men's water polo, as the team rounded out its trip on the east coast. The Navy Open concluded with bouts against No. 18 Navy and Mount St. Mary's.

Biola began Sunday with a tough matchup against the hosting school, Navy. The 18th-ranked Midshipmen worked their way ahead early but BU did not let them out of sight. Two goals in the final minutes of third and one to start the fourth put Biola within five with the last quarter to go.

The second half was a close battle with Navy holding the edge at 8-6. Ryle Hibbard paced the squad with two goals on Sunday with eight different Eagles tallying a goal. Despite the team effort, BU fell 17-9 to Navy.

BU faced its final challenge in the Mount St. Mary's Mounts in the afternoon and were determined not to leave Maryland empty-handed.

The second game of the day was a doozy with the two teams trading blows from start to finish. Through the 32 minute contest there were nine ties and five lead changes.

MSM knotted the game at 13 with two and half minutes left but Hibbard was ready to deliver. With 2:02 on the clock, the sophomore found the back of the net for the go-ahead score. Nolan Rapp followed it up with his own goal one minute later, nearly securing the match. The Mount netted a goal with 19 seconds left but the Eagles were able to hold the possession for those final seconds, polishing off the 15-14 victory.

Once again, Hibbard collected a pair of scores but was outdone by teammates Rapp and Kyle Seifen who each offered a hat trick. Nick Murray and John Grasso joined the scoring flurry with two goals apiece.

Biola will return to the pool in Long Beach on Saturday, facing Brown at 10:00 am and Long Beach State at 2:30 pm.
