Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Eagles Battle Ranked Foes

Biola had some local competition in week two, taking on two ranked D1 opponents in Long Beach.

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Biola Men's Water Polo had a pair of NCAA Division I opponents on its plate for Saturday out in Long Beach. The Eagles battled defensively to keep both matches respectfully close, but could not find their way to a win during the second weekend of the 2024 season.

Head Coach Rick Nordell's squad drops to 1-5 on the young season following a 12-6 loss to No. 18 Brown University and an 18-8 defeat at the hands of No. 10 Long Beach State.

Game 1 - Biola - 6, #18 Brown - 12
Both teams struggled to find goals early in this matchup, setting the tone for a relatively low-scoring affair. It was not until Brown's Dominik Balla dented the twine almost five minutes in that the game found its first goal.

Brown held Biola off the board in the first period to establish a 2-0 advantage. The Eagles would turn around the offense a bit with two goals in each of the three remaining periods, but Brown was always just a bit out of reach, especially following a 4-goal period for them in the third.

The ranked Brown team had a 5-0 scoring stretch from the end of the third into the start of the fourth that put the match away.

The Bears went 6-for-11 in man-up situations, where Biola could have been more successful with just a 2-for-10 showing. That difference made a big impact on the final scoreline.

Biola's offense was led by Nick Murray and Nolan Rapp. Rapp, one of Biola's first four-year seniors, had two goals and an assist in this effort. Murray add two goals of his own.

Mitchell Carpenter played nearly the entire game and came up with eight saves.

Game 2 - Biola - 8, #10 Long Beach State - 18
Long Beach State used a lopsided third quarter to put an otherwise competitive game into the sphere of a semi-blowout. The Eagles' offense got more goals than in the morning match despite a similar power play performance (2-for-11), however, the ranked LBSU team had too many weapons to keep up.

The Beach was playing at home and took full advantage of that home-pool situation. They made some sizable adjustments coming into the second half, which allowed them to outscore Biola 7-0 in the third and turn a decently competitive 10-5 game into a 17-5 rout.

Head Coach Rick Nordell's team showed some grit in the fourth by managing to outscore LBSU 3-1 in the frame, but at that point, it was of course too little too late.

LBSU's high-octane offense benefited from strong shooting. The home team scored on 55 percent of their shots from the field. Both teams are still in the midst of the early season power play struggles. We mentioned Biola's numbers, but LBSU was also 2-for-7 and crazily enough both teams went 0-for-2 in penalty shot opportunities.

Both sides recorded eight saves a piece, with Carpenter splitting time in between the pipes with Joshua Dachenhausen. The LBSU keepers held Biola to a .333 shooting percentage.

Seven different players accounted for Biola's eight goals in this one, including Owen Curtiss scoring his first goal as a Biola Eagle. Rapp (2 G, 1A) and Kyle Seifin (1 G, 1 A) were Biola's only multi-point men in this one.

Biola will get back to the practice pool this week to prepare for what they hope will be a winning weekend next week as the head to Colorado for the U.S. Air Force Academy's Rare Air Challenge. The 2022 team went 3-1 in the last time BU was featured in the Rare Air Challenge.
