Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

A Work In Progress

Biola Men's Water Polo played one of its best halves of 2024, and one of it's worst, on Thursday.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — After a long time away, Biola Men's Water Polo enjoyed a second-straight day of home game action on Thursday as the Eagles hosted the No. 20 ranked California Baptist Lancers at Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center.

Biola hung in there with the CBU side through a thrilling first half. Unfortunately, the Lancers' prowess on the counterattack led to repeated second-half success for the visitors as they ended up with a double-figure advantage (18-8) when the final buzzer sounded.

The Lancers used a lopsided third quarter to turn a competitive match into something with a distinctly different flavor. They scored six goals to Biola's 1 to take it from a 7-5 halftime score to a 13-6 runaway in just eight minutes.

The primary issue for Biola was on the counterattack. Any time CBU actually had to set up its offense, the BU defense was able to answer the call, coming away with 11 steals and seeing Mitchell Carpenter throw up 13 blocks.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, they Lancers split their second-half possessions about 50-50 between the breakaway and the half-court offense. Each time in transition, CBU was able to get quick passes into the players on the post and beat the hard-working and quick-moving Carpenter.

Biola managed to get eight shots past the CBU duo of keepers, most of those scores coming from the inside players like Gavin McKenzie, who recorded a hat trick against his former team. It's McKenzie's third multi-goal game of the season, all coming in the past two weeks.

The most exciting part of the contest came in the middle of the second period as Biola scored 3 goals in a flurry to cut what had been a sizeable CBU lead down to just one at 6-5 Lancers. Kyle Seifen and Nolan Rapp scored goals four and five for BU to send the big Biola crowd into a frenzy.

John Grasso, Braeden Marsolini and Nick Murray rounded out Biola's group of scorers in this one.

The Eagles drop to 4-9 following the ranked loss. They will have a chance to bounce back quickly when they participate in a local tournament at CSU Fullerton this weekend. The Eagles face the Redlands Bulldogs and CSUF Titans on Saturday. The matches will be live streamed on ESPN+.
