Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Eagles Split the Day

Biola's defense dominates Redlands, but CSUF gets the afternoon win.

FULLERTON, Calif. — Biola Men's Water Polo concluded its busy week with a pair of matches in a mini-invite at CSU Fullerton. The Eagles picked up a big win over the University of Redlands in its opener and then dropped their nightcap to the host school, the Titans.

The split brings the Eagles' overall record to 5-10. They will now have some time to catch their breath before breaking back into action on Thursday of this next week with a three-match day split between Splash! and Whittier College.

GAME ONE: Biola - 9, Redlands - 5
This tilt was a defensive battle from the opening sprint. Biola managed to hold the Redlands Bulldogs off the board for the entire first half as the Bulldogs missed all of their first 18 shots.

The Eagles used that slow start from the opposition to build a 4-0 lead at the halftime break. BU scored two goals in each of the first three periods and then scored a three-piece in the fourth to work it's way to a win despite scoring in the single digits.

Biola tallied its first six goals before Redlands was able to sneak even one past the Biola goalkeepers. It was not until the game's 22nd minute that the Bulldogs dented the twine. Mitchell Carpenter played the whole game this time through and tallied 14 blocks in the win.

Gavin McKenzie scored two of the Eagles' first six goals as they established the big lead. He would add another later to score another hat trick. That made back-to-back hat tricks for the young man.

McKenzie was the only Eagle with multiple goals in this one, but there were others with multiple points. Nolan Rapp was wheeling and dealing, dishing out three assists to go with one goal.

Redlands was able to match the Eagles' scoring pace in the second half as the Bulldogs and Eagles each had five goals. The closest they came to taking a lead was when they brought the game to within two at 7-5 following three consecutive scores.

The Eagles got goals from William Tibbetts and Rapp to score the last two goals of the contest and lock in the four-goal victory.

GAME TWO: Biola - 8, CSUF - 13
For just the second time ever Biola Men's Water Polo squared up with CSU Fullerton. In last year's first-ever match up the two teams battled to a thrilling 14-12 final, which went in favor of Biola.

This time around, it was the Titans with the upper hand, thanks in large part to a consistent narrow advantage in each period of play. The Titans outscored Biola 4-3 in the first, 4-2 in the second, 2-1 in the third and 3-2 in the game's final period to build their win.

The Titans shot the ball at almost a 50 percent effort, making a goal on 13 of their 28 attempts at goal. Their offense was flowing through solid connections in the passing game. They managed assists on 11 of their 13 scores.

Biola got on the board first, scoring the first two goals of the contest in another strong defensive start. Adam LaVoy and Nick Murray converted from inside, but then the Biola boys were held off the board for almost five full minutes as CSUF scored three in a row to take the lead for the first time.

A stretch of four consecutive Fullerton goals in second quarter ensured that Biola would never take the lead again. The Eagles attempted to play catch up for the rest of the day, helped along by a Caleb Hernandez hat trick. But, Fullerton's consistent scoring and nine goalkeeper saves were too much to overcome.

Catch coach Nordell and the Eagles back at home on Thursday at 9 a.m. against Mount St. Mary's (2-10).
