Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

A Delightful Bounceback

Biola overcomes a slow as molasses start to get a big win out in Colorado.

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colorado — It's not how you start, it's how you finish. And, on Saturday morning in Colorado the Biola Men's Water Polo team finished very, very strong.

The Eagles were pitted against NCAA Division III foe Augustana (Ill.) in a morning matchup at the Air Force Rare Air Classic. Despite going down five goals to one in the first quarter, Biola answered back in a big way with eight unanswered goals, including a 6-0 scoreline in the second quarter. The Eagles secured a 16-9 victory to improve to 2-6 on the new season.

Five different players tallied two goals for the Biola offense, including Matthew Rodriguez, Jake Burns, Nick Murray, Gavin McKenzie and Caleb Hernandez. Both of Hernandez and McKenzie's goals came during the Eagles' eight-goal run between the second and third period. Burns, Hernandez and Ryan Previch were the team's leading point scorers with 3 points each.

Aside from the first quarter, though, it was the Eagles' defense that sparkled. Biola held the Augustana offense to only 19 shots, while the Eagles happened to record 34. The difference in shots was keyed by an eye-popping 20 steals recorded by the BU defense. The 20 steals was nearly double the team's previous season-high (11). Biola's composure on defense was also on display as the team had a season-low six exclusions called against them.

Winning sprints continues to be an area for improvement as the Eagles were 0-for-4 to open periods even in this winning effort.

Up next for coach Nordell's squad is a match against the hosting Falcons (4-5). Biola will meet them at 3:30 p.m. pacific time. This match will actually be live streamed on ESPN+. Live statistics are available on The FOSH.
