Eagles Register Two Double-Doubles in Five-Set Loss

The Biola volleyball team dropped a five-set battle to Saint Martins at the Johnson Sports Center.

NAMPA, ID---The Biola volleyball team dropped a five-set battle to Saint Martins at the Johnson Sports Center. The Eagles showed heart, with a late match rally, but would end up falling 17-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-22, 15-9 to the Saints.

Hannah Hanson and Kendall Vandertuig had standout performances against the Saints, both earning double-doubles. Vandertuig recorded 20 kills and 19 digs and Hanson had 46 assists and 13 digs.

Biola had a bumpy start but would find their stride in the third set. The third set began with the Eagles and Saints trading points, but BU would eventually break away with a four-point run, giving them the first considerable lead (14-8). Hanson got the momentum flowing with a kill and then a service ace. Vandertuig got Biola's next point, executing a kill, and the last point was from a Saint error.

Another four-point run at 21-15 further separated Biola. The Eagles recorded kills from Hannah Guzzetti and Vandertuig and benefited from two Saint errors to lead 24-15.

Saint Martin's came back with two points but Vandertuig, with a set from Hanson, would seal the deal with a kill, giving Biola their first victory (25-17).

The Eagles used the momentum they generated in the third to fuel their fourth-set triumph. No one led by more than two points until the Saints carried out a four-point run which put them ahead 17-13.

Biola kept their composure and answered back by doubling their opponent's run. Emma Fairbairn got in BU's first kill of the eight-point run. Vandertuig had three kills and Bri Bellfi and Guzzetti had one each. Biola also benefited from two Saint errors to gain a 21-17 advantage.

Saint Martin's wouldn't go down quietly, but Biola would outlast them and end the set with a victory. Vandertuig had another kill at 24-22 and a Saint error would make the score 25-22.

Saint Martin's found a second wind in the fifth set and managed to keep Biola at bay in their 15-9 match-clinching win. Fairbairn led Biola's offensive attack with four kills, Vandertuig had three and Guzzetti and Payton Tully recorded one a piece.

Biola won the service ace battle, collecting nine service aces to Saint Martin's five. Hanson led the Eagles with three, Julia Peet had two and four Eagles tallied one.

Additionally, Fairbairn was also an offensive standout recording 15 kills.

Biola returns home 2-6 overall and will prepare for their home opener on Friday, September 10 at 5 pm.
