In It To The End

Biola pushes the host school to five sets, but can't answer late NNU run in the 5th.

NAMPA, Idaho — Week number two of the Biola Volleyball season got underway on Thursday evening as Head Coach Brian Failinger's Eagles battled tooth-and-nail against the hosting Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks in a 5-set thriller in Idaho. The hosts won sets one, three and five (15-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-17, 8-15) to clinch the match.

The Eagles stepped into the Johnson Sports Center for the first of their four matches this weekend and gave NNU a run for their money. It's the first time Biola's participated in the NNU Hampton Inn & Suites Nighthawk Classic since the Fall of 2018.

Madison Moore led the Eagles' effort with 14 kills, while Kendall Vander Tuig had 11 of her own. Biola's offense had its second-best effort of the year to rack up 49 kills overall. While not sparkling, the .114 hitting percentage was the best among Biola's losing efforts so far in 2024.

A lot of that offense was set up by first-season Eagle, Lexi Lambert. She tallied a new season-high for assists with 40 in this one.

The nail in the coffin for Biola came in the form of two distinct long runs of points for NNU in that decisive fifth game. The Eagles scored the first rally, but then dropped five straight to the Nighthawks to go down 5-1. Then, it was another long run at the end of the set that clinched it. NNU scored a point in five of the final six rallies to pick up a third win of the season.

Biola did look really solid in the two sets it did win, holding the Nighthawks at an eight-point margin in each of them. Coincidentally enough, in set two it was a pair of long runs of points that lifted Biola out of an early hole. In set four, a six-point run while Bethany Belfi had the serve helped Biola dig out of a 7-2 deficit and work their way to a set win to extend the match.

The Bellfi twins combined for 45 digs as Bri Bellfi had 30 to go with 15 from Bethany. Biola had to put up with a strong defensive effort from NNU, though as the Nighthawks out-dug BU 88-82.

The loss drops the Eagles to 1-4 on the season. They will look to bounce back in a match against Colorado School of Mines (2-4) at 10:30 a.m. PT tomorrow. That match can be viewed live at https://www.youtube.com/live/qgl9_fdqfXA. Biola faces Augustana in the afternoon match at 3:30 p.m. PT.
