Moore Good Things

Madison Moore has a double-double to lead BU to an exciting 5-set win.

NAMPA, Idaho — Biola's young roster showed resilience and tenacity in a grueling second set, using a 32-30 extra-point set win to key its 5-set victory over Colorado School of Mines on Friday morning in Idaho (14-25, 32-30, 25-28, 18-25, 15-12).

It was the Eagles' second consecutive five-set match, and for the first time this season Biola earned a clinching win in the fifth set.

It was a long road to get there though as Head Coach Brian Failinger's Eagles had to overcome a disappointing first frame, a marathon second frame and a frustrating fourth frame just to get in position to win in that fifth set.

The highlight of the match was the tremendous second set, which featured an eye-popping 62 rallies and saw both teams record sparking attack numbers. Biola tallier 24 kills in the second set alone while hitting .304. The Orediggers had 19 kills of their own while hitting .280.

The back-and-forth in that set would put a crick in your neck. The teams traded points throughout the entire game, with neither team ever leading by more than two points total.

Biola used a kill from Madison Moore, followed by a dagger from Hannah Hanson and then an attack error from Mines to turn a 30-29 deficit into a 32-30 victory in the second set, narrowly avoiding going down 0-2 in the match. Biola successfully defended four Oredigger set points before locking up the game by landing the win on their own fourth set point chance.

After that game, Failinger's Eagles had arguably their best set yet on this young season in the third game. The team had 14 kills on a .387 clip and forced six attack errors from their opponent en route to a big 25-18 win.

Sandwiched among those kills and the errors from CSM was four Biola service aces from four different players. Biola had a season-high 11 aces in the match. The Idaho-air has been good for the BU service game as Biola has 10+ aces in each of its matches so far at the NNU Hampton Inn & Suites Nighthawk Classic.

The fourth set was one to forget, but thankfully the Eagles were successfully able to move past it in the fifth. Biola took a 7-1 lead in the fifth and then held on for dear life as the Orediggers had a comeback down the stretch. Ultimately, a Colorado School of Mines service error closed out the fifth set 15-12 in favor of BU.

Madison Moore once again led the Eagles' offense. She had 22 kills, while Kendall Vandertuig (14) and Payton Tully (11) both also hit double digits. Moore had a double-double because she also tacked on 13 digs.

The win moves the Eagles to 2-4 on the season and drops the Orediggers to 2-5. Up next for Biola is its third of four matches out in Idaho. The Eagles face Augustana (3-3) at 3:30 p.m. PT. Watch that match live at https://www.youtube.com/live/rum0svkFRh8.
