April 06, 2024

KANSAS CITY, Mo. --- Dr. Dave Holmquist added to his legendary career with another award honoring his dedication to the growth of student-athletes on and off the court. Small College Basketball bestowed the SCB Harry Statham Coach of Impact Award to Dr. Dave Holmquist on Friday.

"We celebrate Coach Holmquist receiving the Harry Statham Coach of Impact Award," said Biola Senior Director of Athletics Dr. Bethany Miller. "Dr. Holmquist models the values of integrity and high character - specifically in his humility, wisdom, and intentional care for others."

The purpose of the Harry Statham Coach of Impact Award is to honor a coach that has used the  power of the coaching platform to make a positive impact on players, coaches, and others. The  coach is a person of high character and integrity who has served as an excellent role model,  and who has deeply impacted the lives of others.

Dr. Holmquist finished his 44th season as the head coach of the Biola Men's Basketball squad in March. Through his illustrious career, he has gathered 1,058 wins, which ranks fourth amongst NCAA and NAIA coaches all-time. Dr. Holmquist boasts 30 seasons with at least 20 wins and 29 total national tournament appearances. Through 44 years, he has corralled five conference coach of the year honors and two national coach of the year awards.

The award is named after Harry Statham, former Head Basketball Coach at McKendree University.  Coach Statham is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)  Basketball Hall of Fame and concluded his 52-year career with 1,122 wins.

In addition to his time coaching on the court, Dr. Holmquist spent 27 years as the Director of Athletics at Biola. He did double time as head coach and director during those years before shifting back to just coaching before the transition to the NCAA Division II.

Coach Holmquist was honored to earn such an award, "It's a great honor to be the recipient of the 2024 Harry Statham Coach of Impact Award because of what the award represents, and because it will always connect me with Coach Statham, who had such a wonderful career and had so much influence on countless players and coaches, I am both humbled and grateful."

Dr. Holmquist is the fifth winner of the SCB Harry Statham Award, going back to 2019.

"Dr. Holmquist's scope of influence is shared by a vast number of student-athlete alumni, coaches, administrators, and our Biola University community," added Dr. Miller. "I am grateful for his presence here at Biola and his profound impact in the world of college athletics and beyond."

Small College Basketball also honored Dr. Jim Poteet with the Lifetime Achievement Award on Friday. Dr. Poteet was the Men's Basketball Head Coach at Biola from 1968-71. He was just the fifth head coach in program history and helped recruit Dr. Holmquist when he was a student-athlete.

"I don't know anybody that deserves this more," said Dr. Holmquist of Dr. Poteet earning the SCB Lifetime Achievement Award.
