Eagles Take Down Visiting Pioneers

The Eagles got started early and held a lead throughout the game to beat Cal State East Bay by a final score of 11-8.

LA MIRADA ---The Biola women's water polo team (9-15, 3-1 WWPA) hosted the Pioneers (15-11, 4-1 WWPA) in a conference matchup on Friday at Biola's home territory. The Eagles took advantage of an early lead and never let CSUEB intrude on their way to a 11-8 victory.

Marija Mijuskovic put the Eagles on the board fairly early to set the tone for the rest of the game. Lizzy Birch, who was one of two Eagles to score three goals on Friday, added on to the Biola lead, making it a 2-0 game. The Eagles defense was strong as they held the Pioneers scoreless through the first quarter.

Veralie Naranjo kept the early-scoring pace going as they rolled into the second quarter and she scored in the first minute. Cal State East Bay stepped up and scored back-to-back goals making it a tight 3-2 game. Birch and Naranjo tacked on two more goals to close out the first half and extend Biola's lead to 5-2 before the Pioneers would add one more for a 5-3 score at the end of the first half.

Both defense's were outstanding in the third quarter as neither team was able to score until the latter half of the quarter. The Pioneers scored first, cutting their deficit down to one, but Mijuskovic answered back quickly with her second goal of the game. Mia Mulhall and Maria Roldan-Gonzalez put up two more goals late in the third quarter. Although the Pioneers scored again, the Eagles still held a strong 8-5 lead going into the fourth quarter.

CSUEB started to heat up in the final quarter, but thanks to Birch's and Naranjo's third goals of the game, the Eagles were able to keep a comfortable lead. With just over 10 seconds to go in a 10-8 game, Roldan-Gonzalez decided to add on one more goal to secure the 11-8 win at home.

Birch scored three goals and also had a steal and two field blocks. Naranjo also had three goals and an assist. Mijuskovic helped out the Eagles both on offense and defense with her two goals, two assists, one steal and a field block. Roldan-Gonzalez was another all-around standout  player on Friday with her two goals, two assists and four steals.

Alicia Fregoso defended the cage throughout the whole game and helped BU with her eight saves.

The Eagles will host Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, April 12th at 1:00 pm for the Eagles' Senior Day.
