Moving On

The Eagles nabbed the win in the opening round of the WWPA Tournament, taking the game against Gannon.

LA MIRADA --- Biola played host to the WWPA Tournament for the first time and took advantage of playing at their home pool. The Eagles maintained control throughout Friday's contest to take down Gannon, 15-9 and advance to the semifinals set for Saturday at 4:30 pm.

#1 West Biola faced #4 East Gannon in the final contest of the first round of the WWPA Championships on Friday afternoon. The quest for a second-straight title began on track for the Eagles, never trailing in game one.

"Our team has been working so hard this past year and we can't wait to show what we have been preparing and working for this whole season," commented Christina Cervantes.

Biola did not waste time in a battle with the Golden Knights, putting three goals on the scoreboard in a matter of just over three minutes. Veralie Naranjo got things going on a power play, before Maria Roldan Gonzalez and Mattie Herzog opened up a 3-0 lead.

Six goals flooded in for the Eagles in the opening quarter on the way to a 6-2 BU advantage.

"I'm so proud of my team for our offensive and defensive play this game!" said Maria Roldan Gonzalez.

Gannon could only pull within three the rest of the way, as the BU squad maintained consistent separation.

Eight different Eagles dented the twine on Friday with Roldan Gonzalez pacing the squad with four. The senior added an assist for five points, while also tacking on one steal and one drawn exclusion.

Marija Mijuskovic and Naranjo offered strong days in the pool with four points apiece. Three goals came from Mijuskovic and Naranjo piled on two goals, two assists and four drawn exclusions.

BU's goalkeeper Alicia Fregoso got in on the scoring action with a last-second score in the third period. The righty netted one goal and two steals, while nabbing six saves in the win.

Biola will be back in action on Saturday, facing #2 East Mercyhurst in the semifinals at 4:30 pm.
