Success in Semis, Championship Game Bound

The Eagles earned their way to the WWPA Championship game with a win over Mercyhurst on Saturday.

LA MIRADA --- Biola women's water polo continued its winning streak at the WWPA Championships by taking down #2 East Mercyhurst in the semifinals on Saturday. The 15-8 triumph advanced the Eagles to the WWPA Championship Finals set for Sunday at 1:15 pm.

BU made it six-straight wins at the WWPA Championships with a big win on Saturday. The Eagles rallied from a first quarter deficit to earn their way back to the championship game for a second-consecutive year.

The Biola defense made the difference in the first half to help the team move ahead and take control. After giving up four goals in the opening stanza, BU shutout the Lakers in the second quarter, holding them scoreless for 10 minutes of game action.

BU's keeper Alicia Fregoso played a major role in the defensive effort, picking up 15 saves in the contest. Mercyhurst had plenty of trouble scoring without a Biola exclusion, as five of its eight goals came on a power play or five-meter penalty shot.

Christina Cervantes put Biola in front with a pair of goals to end the first half. The junior's two unanswered, even strength goals gave BU a 6-4 halftime lead.

Biola maintained a lead the rest of the way, while creating significant separation as the game went along.

Over a six-minute stretch between the third and fourth periods, the Eagles went on a 5-0 run to essentially seal the victory. A 9-7 edge, quickly ballooned into a 14-7 advantage with just three minutes left in the contest.

Maria Roldan Gonzalez was superb on Saturday. The senior offered eight points with four goals and four assists.

Cervantes saved her best game of the season for the biggest game yet of 2024 with a career-high four goals. All four scores were 6-on-6 and she also added one assist.

Biola is now set to face Cal State East Bay on Sunday at 1:15 pm for the WWPA Championships. The two teams faced twice in the regular season with each taking the win in their home pool.
