Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Solorzano Secures It!

Biola Men's Tennis clinches third-place with a 4-3 win over CUI to claim season series.

SURPRISE, Arizona — After a regular season split, No. 50 Biola Men's Tennis asserted its superiority over the Concordia Irvine Golden Eagles on Saturday in the third-place game at the PacWest Tennis Championships.

It was close, similar to the first matchup of the season between these two teams, but the Eagles prevailed with a final 4-3 scoreline to close out its run at the championships. Biola now awaits finding out what is next. The NCAA selection show is May 6, and Head Coach David Goodman's squad should be in line for a postseason berth.

The postseason win over Concordia improves Goodman's team to 2-1 all-time in PacWest Championship matchups against CUI. The last time these two sides met on the final day of competition was in 2022. Biola also won 4-3 in that year's fifth-place match.

Concordia took control of the match early on by winning the doubles point courtesy a pair of wins at the no. 2 and no. 3 pairings. The Golden Eagles were also ahead in the top doubles flight when play was stopped.

However, Biola began to turn the tide with the start of singles play. Santino Serrallonga and Alejandro Flores Monteverde earned straight-set victories over their opponents to set the tone for how the head-to-head bouts would play out. It was Serrallonga's second win of the tournament. This time was the first singles match for Flores Monteverde to play to completion.

With a 2-1 advantage in tow, coach Goodman's squad ratcheted up the pressure on the opponents from Irvine as the match wore on and things began to go back-and-forth quickly.

At the top court, the PacWest Newcomer of the Year Nico Ramirez had an epic battle with CUI's Mattis Le Montagner, a second team All-PacWest selection. Le Montagner took the first set 6-2, before Ramirez answered back with a 6-2 win of his own to force a third. Le Montagner, though, found a way to break through with a 6-3 win in the third set to even the overall match at 2-2.

Just minutes later, Patricio Larrea would play a pivotal role in Biola's victory, by clinching sets two and three to win his match at the No. 5 flight. Larrea dropped his first set by four games only to win 6-4 and 6-2 in the follow-up and set his team up to be just one win away from clinching the match.

All the attention turned to courts three and four as Adrian Solorzano and Callen Hein fought for the win for Biola. Hein had his first set in hand as he battled CUI's Spencer Cinco. Solorzano suffered an excruciating 7-6 loss in his first set to CUI's Max Renz. Just one of these two needed to find their way to a win to clinch the match for BU.

In the end, it would be Solorzano who used 6-0 and 6-2 wins in sets two and three to pick up a 2-1 victory in a match lasting just over two hours and 10 minutes. This was Adrian's first completed match of the tournament. He's now won eight of his last nine singles matches. His clinching win moved him to 16-5 on the season. He's 7-0 when playing in the no. 3 spot.

Biola concludes its regular season and PacWest tournament with a 16-8 overall record. It's the second-most wins in program history. The Eagles will have an opportunity to approach the program-record of 18 wins at regionals in a few weeks.
