Lopez Leads BU to Win

Gilbert Lopez kept Concordia quiet to kick off Saturday’s doubleheader with a Biola victory.

LA MIRADA --- Gilbert Lopez set the tone on the mound for the Eagles in a 4-3 win over Concordia (8-5, 4-3 PacWest) on Saturday. The stellar outing brought a narrow win in the opening contest of the weekend home doubleheader for Biola (12-8-1, 4-3 PacWest).

The CUI offense was off balance the whole game behind Lopez's delivery. The righty went seven innings with one out in the eighth, giving up just five hits and two earned runs.

Lopez continually worked in the zone, picking up 10 strikeouts for a career-best mark. He tossed just 99 pitches and offered three perfect innings.

The BU bats got the job done with consistent action on the base paths. 15 hits from the Eagles more than doubled the CUI hit total.

Noah Ruiz was the first Biola runner to cross home plate, following his leadoff double in the second inning. Gavin Ayers did his job and moved Ruiz to third with a bunt before Sam Lisiak singled for the RBI.

With two outs in the second, the hits kept coming as Luke Caruso moved Lisiak to third with a hit to center field. Austin Carillo stepped in next and fought through an 0-2 count to hit a two-out RBI single for a 2-0 Biola lead.

Another leadoff double set the Eagles up for a run-scoring opportunity, as Caruso opened the bottom of the fifth with a two-base knock. Carillo provided the sacrifice bunt and Bobby Brown recorded the RBI, as BU scored its third run of the game and retook the lead at 3-2.

The BU squad added a much needed insurance run in the sixth with a two-out rally. Isaiah Leon brought the spark, doubling down the left field line. Caruso was next up and battled through a tough at bat. The freshman fouled off a pair to keep the at bat alive at 2-2 and ultimately delivered an RBI single on a full count.

In the top of the eighth, Gabe Magallan was handed the ball in a tight situation. The Eagles maintained just a 4-3 lead but the tying run stood on second base. Despite walking two batters and facing a loaded bases, Magallan eked out of the eighth with the lead intact.

Magallan still had three more outs remaining with the scoreline still sitting at 4-3. The sophomore righty forced three fly outs to dance around a pair of singles and Magallan earned his fifth save of the season.

A trio of Eagles corralled a trio of hits including Carillo, Duncan, and Caruso.
