Bunt to Best CUI

The Eagles earned extra innings and laid down a squeeze bunt to steal a victory in game two.

LA MIRADA --- Biola showed its resilience on Saturday, defeating Concordia (8-6, 4-4 PacWest) in comeback fashion. The Eagles (13-8-1, 5-3 PacWest) overcame a two-run deficit in the seventh frame to force extras and claim an 8-7 win for a sweep on the day.

Game two seemed to be in the hands of the visiting GoldenEagles with a 7-5 scoreline heading into the final scheduled inning. Biola would not go quietly though, despite the first two batters striking out in the seventh. AJ Ortiz kept the team alive with a line drive back up the middle for a single and moved to second with a single from Sam Lisiak. The hits kept coming with Luke Caruso, as a third-straight single scored one run and put the tying run on second base. The lefty Austin Carillo took advantage of a 3-1 count and knotted the game at seven with a rope to right field that brought Lisiak home.

Carson Speegle got the job done on the mound in the seventh and eighth. The reliever recorded a scoreless eighth frame to open the opportunity for a BU walkoff.

Wyatt Duncan was quick to action, poking through his fourth hit of the day and putting the leadoff man on base. Jonathan Smith took over at first base for Duncan and stole second to move into scoring position. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for AJ Ortiz with one out.

On the first pitch he saw, Ortiz squared around and laid down a perfect squeeze bunt. Smith scored with ease from third base and the Eagles were the victors.

Early in the contest, Biola was quick to the scoreboard with a three-spot in the first. Noah Ruiz came up big in the cleanup spot, blasting a two-RBI double. The base hit scored Wyatt Duncan from second and Austin Carillo from third base. Ruiz advanced from second to home on a CUI error, opening up an early 3-0 lead for BU.

The Eagles added to their lead in the third for a 4-0 edge but Concordia was due for a rally. The visitors strung together five hits and two walks to notch six runs in the fourth inning. The surge created a two-run lead for CUI.

Saturday's game two win was the first for Speegle at Biola.

Duncan cemented a fantastic day at the plate, adding a second three-hit effort on Saturday. Through the two games, Duncan went 7-9 with a walk and one run scored.

Caruso also had himself a day at the plate, logging five hits with a pair of RBI.

The Eagles will return for a single non-conference on Tuesday, facing CSU Dominguez Hills on the road at 3:00 pm.
