Making it Happen

The BU women’s water polo squad put together a 6-0 third quarter to take control in a win at CSU Monterey Bay.

SEASIDE, Calif. --- Biola was caught up in another heated battle on Saturday in Seaside, California. Strong winds impacted the day, as the Eagles (8-15, 2-1 WWPA) climbed ahead for a 11-10 victory over CSU Monterey Bay (4-15, 0-3 WWPA) with an electric third quarter.

The third quarter was the difference on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles and Otters took to the Otter Tank and entered the halftime break with a 7-5 scoreline in the favor of CSUMB. Biola shot out of a cannon to open the third.

The first possession for the Eagles resulted in a goal, as Maria Roldan Gonzalez brought the Eagles within one at 7-6. One minute later, Myah Ibarra got into an advantageous position and drew an exclusion. The freshman did not waste much time, quickly putting the ball into the net for the power play equalizer.

The momentum stayed with the Eagles for the whole third stanza. A 6-0 scoring run changed the outlook of the game, as Biola moved into the lead at 11-7. Ibarra scored two more times in the quarter and was joined by Marija Mijuskovic and Mattie Herzog with goals to help BU take control.

The fourth quarter was all that stood between Biola and victory and the Otters gave them a go. BU went scoreless through the entirety of the fourth and CSUMB nabbed back-to-back scores in the middle of the period. With just under two minutes to go, the Otters pulled within one at 11-10. The BU defense stepped up in the waning seconds and delivered with two defensive stops to close out the win.

Veralie Naranjo carried the load offensively in the first half, collecting three goals. The hat trick extended her streak of games with at least one goal to 12-straight.

Ibarra was the lead goal-scorer for BU, recording four on the day.

Alicia Fregoso picked up eight saves in goal for Biola, while posting her second win of the season.

Biola will be back in action at home next Friday, April 5 against CSU East Bay at 1:00 pm.
