Silent Stretch Stifles Biola

RV Biola battled RV Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday and rallied late but could not overcome.

CLAREMONT, Calif. --- Saturday featured a matchup between Biola (7-14) and Pomona-Pitzer (10-10) in Claremont, California. The two teams received votes in the latest CWPA National Poll and put on a show in the pool. The back-and-forth game ended with the Sagehens on top, 12-10, as the Eagles went 16 minutes without a goal.

The BU women's water polo squad tackled the early game by taking advantage of Pomona-Pitzer exclusions. The final two goals of the first quarter came off of Sagehen mishaps with a five-meter penalty goal from Veralie Naranjo and a power play score from Marija Mijuskovic

The 3-2 lead for the Eagles was expanded in the second with Naranjo finding the net once again. A power play for each team resulted in goals for each side but Rachel Spadt succeeded in heightening the Biola edge to 6-3.

Then it was all the Sagehens. Pomona-Pitzer went on a 9-0 scoring run from the end of the second to the middle of the fourth period. Ultimately, the Eagles were unable to put the ball in the goal for 16 minutes of game time.

Now, down 12-6, the Eagles kicked it into high gear in the final three minutes and 30 seconds. Naranjo and Kaycie Bradshaw brought life to the team with back-to-back scores. A couple empty possessions thwarted their chances but the Eagles kept fighting. Naranjo piled on two more goals before the final buzzer, bringing the team's total to 10.

Naranjo recorded her 10th-straight game with a goal on Saturday. The junior collected six goals on the day, including two drawn exclusions.

Chloe McKay earned her first start in the cage and offered up 10 saves in 24 minutes.

Maria Roldan Gonzalez and Spadt mirrored each other in the box score with one goal and two assists apiece.

Biola will continue its four-game road trip on Friday, taking on CSU East Bay at 1:00 pm.
