Eagles Fall Late to Lancers

The second half went the way of CBU in Friday’s afternoon matchup in Riverside.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Biola (7-13) went back to its non-conference slate on Friday, battling California Baptist (8-13) on the road. The two teams traded blows for 16 minutes but CBU took control late in the game for a 15-9 final score.

The first quarter went by evenly at 3-3. The Eagles got good action from Rachel Spadt, who dented the twine twice. Marija Mijuskovic scored in the other opening stanza with a long distance skip shot to the far post.

As the match transitioned to quarter number two, the two teams remained side-by-side. Veralie Naranjo notched a goal on a five-meter penalty to open the scoring in the second.

The master of the skip shot maintained her magic, as Mijuskovic scored again. The bounce off the water was too much for the goalie to handle and the teams were tied at six. The back and forth continued though, as Lizzy Birch grabbed the rebound off a Naranjo shot and put it in for a BU lead, before CBU responded on the next possession to lock the game at seven.

With 30 seconds left in the half, the Eagles brought out their goalkeeper, Alicia Fregoso for the final offensive possession. With the extra offender, Fregoso glided forward with no opposition and beat the CBU goalie for her second goal of 2024. The last-second score gave BU a 8-7 lead at the break.

The third quarter belonged to the Lancers and swung the game in their favor. The host squad netted five goals to just one from Biola with help from one power play and one five-meter penalty.

Maria Roldan Gonzalez tacked on the lone goal for BU in third, tucking a shot inside the right post. The veteran also earned a five-meter penalty for the team but Biola could not convert.

The momentum stayed with CBU, as the Lancers scored the final six goals of the game for the 15-9 final.

Roldan Gonzalez was a key cog on Friday, producing three points to match a team-high from Naranjo. Both Eagles grabbed three points with two drawn exclusions to propel the BU offense.

Biola will be back in action on Saturday, facing Pomona-Pitzer in Claremont, California at 4:00 pm.
