A Terrific Third

The third quarter spelled success for Biola in its conference opener against Fresno Pacific.

LA MIRADA --- Biola (7-12, 1-0 WWPA) returned home on Wednesday, facing WWPA foe, Fresno Pacific (8-7, 1-1 WWPA), in its conference opener. A slow start did not hinder the Eagles, who piled on six goals in the third quarter to help nab a 9-6 victory over the Sunbirds.

Wednesday's contest was physical from the jump with both defenses showcasing their talent early. Through one quarter, only one goal was on the scoreboard, as FPU notched a score in the final seconds of the opening stanza.

The second period did not offer much more offense. Each team tacked on a goal in the first three minutes of the quarter, marking a 3-2 halftime lead for the visitors.

Coming out of the halftime break, it was Marija Mijuskovic to give the Eagles a jolt. The Belgrade, Serbia native evened the game at three with a long range skip shot that beat the goalie. A FPU goal put the Sunbirds back in front but not for long as Mijuskovic scored on the next possession with another fantastic skip shot.

An exclusion set up the next BU goal on the next offensive opportunity. In the 6-on-5 scenario, Rachel Spadt got the ball directly in front of the goal and beat the goalie to the right with a fake pass and a quick shot just inside the post.

The first lead of the day for the Eagles lasted just 23 seconds, as Fresno Pacific answered with a goal of its own.

But the back-and-forth continued with stellar touch from Mattie Herzog. Herzog got the ball down near the cage and placed a beautiful lob over the keeper and into the net for a 5-4 BU edge.

Through a 2:20 stretch in the third quarter, the two teams combined for six goals with only one possession not resulting in a goal.

Biola capped off the third with a 3-0 run, including another goal from Herzog and one more score from Spadt. The 6-2 stanza for the Eagles opened up a three-goal lead entering the fourth and final quarter.

The BU offense went quiet to start the fourth and FPU took advantage. Two goals from the visitors closed the gap with just under four minutes on the clock.

With the pressure on, Kaycie Bradshaw found the space inside and cashed in. The utility made her move near the cage and found the twine, halting the FPU momentum. Veralie Naranjo added a goal in the closing minute to seal the win at 9-6.

Alicia Fregoso logged all 32 minutes in goal, grabbing five saves while allowing just six goals in the victory.

Spadt led the attack with six points on Wednesday. Spadt recorded three goals and three assists to lead the team in both categories. Herzog also had herself a day with two goals and two assists and a drawn exclusion.

Biola women's water polo will be back in the pool on Friday at California Baptist at 1:00 pm.
