Ibarra Wins It

Myah Ibarra landed the game-winner on Friday night, as the Eagles defeated Iona, 14-13.

ORANGE, Calif. --- The Eagles jumped back into the pool Friday evening for their second bout of the day, taking on Iona in the Claremont Convergence. Electricity filled the Zee Allred Aquatics Center as Biola (6-9) and Iona (5-6) battled evenly from start to finish. It was the Eagles to gain the edge though, in a thrilling 14-13 final score.

The margins were razor thin throughout Friday night's bout. Neither team gained more than a two-goal advantage with five ties and three lead changes defining the match.

The crunch time was nerve-racking, as Biola faced the final six minutes down by two at 12-10. The Eagles began to rally and mounted their comeback with back-to-back goals off Iona exclusions. Myah Ibarra brought BU within one with a power play score at the six-minute mark, before Marija Mijuskovic knotted the game at 12 with a five-meter penalty shot.

The Gaels battled back and took the lead once again with their own power play, as the clock ticked past four minutes.

With the game on the line, BU put together its best effort beginning with a beautiful shot from Mijuskovic. The junior placed a skip shot just inside the post and evened the game at 13, resetting the contest with 3:52 on the clock.

The scoreline of 13-13 stuck for the next two minutes, as the intensity rose. With just over a minute left, BU drew an exclusion and opened up a power play opportunity. Ibarra was the one to take a look at the goal and the freshman cashed in to take the lead. She lasered a shot to the upper left corner of the cage and hit the inside part of the post to ricochet into the net.

The 14-13 lead would hold through the final buzzer with the help of BU goalkeeper Damaris Kientz. Kientz stuffed a close range shot in the final moments to seal the victory for the Eagles.

Kientz delivered for the BU squad all night. The junior pulled in 13 saves on Friday, surpassing 100 saves on the season.

Ibarra and Mijuskovic were the dominant threats on offense with four goals apiece in the win. Mattie Herzog was not far behind, connecting on three shots.

Biola will continue in the Claremont Convergence on Saturday, facing San Diego State at 10:30 am at the Haldeman Pool.
