Game Recap: Women's Water Polo | | Ethan McGarvey, Sports Information Director

Strong Start Is Not Enough

Biola came out ahead after the first quarter but could not hold on against No. 25 San Diego State.

CLAREMONT, Calif. --- Biola women's water polo logged another top-25 bout on Saturday morning. The Eagles (6-10) battled against No. 25 San Diego State (10-6) and jumped out to a lead in the opening quarter. The Aztecs overcame in the end, defeating Biola by a final score of 15-10.

BU saw its third matchup of the Claremont Convergence with its contest against SDSU. The morning tilt came just over 12 hours following their wire-to-wire game the night before.

The Eagles carried their momentum from Friday's thrilling, last-minute win and pushed ahead in the early going.

It did not take long for Marija Mijuskovic to find the back of the net, opening the scoring for both teams one minute and 20 seconds into the game.

SDSU responded with two goals of its own coming on back-to-back possessions to take the lead at 2-1.

Biola began to roll on offense, though, putting together a 4-1 rally extending into the second quarter. Myah Ibarra sparked the rally with a goal in the back half of the first quarter. Mattie Herzog followed up with a power play score on the team's next possession, retaking the lead in the contest.

A single Aztec goal separated a pair of BU goals from another, as Veralie Naranjo dented the twine on a power play in the waning seconds of the first. The second quarter started quickly for BU, as Christina Cervantes grabbed the opening sprint and just 16 seconds later Ibarra cashed in for her second goal of the game, giving Biola a 5-3 edge.

San Diego State flipped the script with five-straight goals over a five minute stretch in the second stanza. The huge turn of events gave the Aztecs a 9-6 advantage at the half.

The Aztecs continued to push their advantage in the second half, taking both the third and fourth quarters by a 3-2 margin.

In addition to her sprint win, Cervantes matched Naranjo and Ibarra for the team-high of two goals on Saturday.

Biola will wrap up the Claremont Convergence at 2:30 pm on Saturday, taking on No. 11 Arizona State.
