Eagles Go Toe-to-Toe With #15 UCSD

Biola opened up the Claremont Convergence with a ranked matchup against UC San Diego and Roldan Gonzalez led the Eagles with four goals.

ORANGE, Calif. --- Friday's double feature began in the afternoon for Biola women's water polo. The Eagles (5-9) took on No. 15 UC San Diego (9-8) at the Zee Allred Aquatics Center to open the Claremont Convergence on Friday. BU was just a step behind the Tritons and could not overcome in a 15-10 loss.

Biola fell behind with quick scoring from the Tritons in the first quarter. BU met a 2-0 deficit following three and a half minutes of action.

Maria Roldan Gonzalez put the team on the scoreboard in the first stanza with an open left side of the cage. A nice cross-pool pass came through from Lizzy Birch to set up the opportunity.

After a 3-1 first quarter, Biola evened the pace in the second. The second set of eight minutes featured three goals for each team with BU and UCSD going back and forth throughout.

BU's scores came from Roldan Gonzalez, Stephanie Rodriguez and Veralie Naranjo in the second period. Rodriguez offered up a nice shot from long range, sneaking it past the outstretched arms of the UCSD keeper for her second goal of the year. Naranjo cashed in with the last goal of the first half, notching a break-away score for a 6-4 margin at the halftime break.

Myah Ibarra was the next to dent the twine, showing off her quick release. The freshman sank a shot from far out as the shot clock was nearly expiring, keeping the Eagles within reach early in the second half.

The Triton offense was humming and continued to fight off the Biola comeback effort. UCSD boosted its lead to 9-5 with back-to-back quick scores.

Mattie Herzog was the next BU scorer, as the Eagles grabbed their second tally of the third. A power play opened space near the cage and Herzog tucked a shot into the top left corner of the goal.

The next opportunity for BU came from the strong play of Kaycie Bradshaw. The sophomore made a great move inside and forced a five-meter penalty. Naranjo was given the ball for the penalty shot and the righty beat the goalie, shortening the deficit to 9-7.

The back and forth continued through the end of the third, as the two teams traded goals entering the fourth quarter. Roldan Gonzalez scored the fourth goal of the period for BU from eight meters out. With eight minutes of action to go, the Eagles trailed, 11-8.

After the two teams scored on the first three possessions of the final stanza, the offenses went quiet as neither team found a goal for four-straight minutes. Finally it was UCSD to break the silence and extend their lead in the final minutes.

Bradshaw tallied the final goal for BU, offering a nice turnaround shot from close  to the cage. Rodriguez fed her the pass for her second point of the day.

Roldan Gonzalez was the leader in the clubhouse for Biola offense, logging four goals on nine shots.

Damaris Kientz carried the load in goal, finding 12 saves through 32 minutes of action.

Biola will be right back in the pool later on Friday, as the team is set to face Iona at 5:45pm.
