BU Drops First Contest in Ninth

Friday began with heartbreak for Biola, as the team fell to MSU Denver for its first loss of 2024.

DENVER, Colo. --- Day two of MSU Denver versus Biola (4-1) saw a change of pace from day one. Friday started with a pitching duel between Bobby Brown of Biola and Slominski from MSU Denver. The two teams entered the ninth tied but the hosting Roadrunners (2-4) secured the walkoff in a 4-2 final.

Hits were far and few between for the Eagles on Friday morning, as the team struggled to get on the board. A pair of two-out singles put a runner in scoring position in the first inning but then the offense went dry not seeing another base runner until the fifth.

In the meantime, Brown went to work on the mound, retiring the first eight batters he faced. Through six and two-third frames Brown gave up just three hits and two runs with seven strikeouts. The only scores came in the fourth inning with errors assisting the runs.

The BU lineup finally strung together hits in the seventh to put a run up on the scoreboard. Andrew Lujan opened the rally with a double and nabbed third to put himself in prime position for a score. With two outs, Isaiah Leon delivered with a hit up the middle, bringing across Lujan for a 2-1 deficit.

In the next frame, Noah Ruiz took matters into his own hands with a home run to left-center. The sophomore knotted the game at two with his second extra-base hit of the day.

The game remained at 2-2 through to the bottom of the ninth. MSU Denver took advantage of its walkoff opportunity and left the yard for a two-run homer, finishing off a 4-2 win.

Biola and MSU Denver will complete their four game series later on Friday afternoon.
