Eagles Drop Nailbiter

The women’s basketball team dropped a 53-49 nailbiter to Hawaii Hilo at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

HILO, Hawaii---The Biola women's basketball team dropped a 53-49 nailbiter to Hawaii Hilo at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. 

The first half was especially close as each team took the lead five times and the game was tied up seven. In the first two quarters, neither team took a lead bigger than three points and five times a team only led by one point.

UH Hilo (9-11, 6-8 PacWest) out-scored Biola (11-11, 7-7) by two points in the first quarter (17-15), but the Eagles would come back to out-score the Vulcans 8-6 in the second which made it an extremely tight frame.

The score was tied four times alone in the second quarter. Jessa Thurman scored the last basket of the second, which knotted the score 23-23 heading into the third.

The Vulcans opened the third quarter strong, going on a nine-point run that allowed them to lead by nine (32-23). The Eagles began chipping away and would bring the game as close as one point with 13 seconds remaining in the quarter.

Natasa Radovic made the layup that brought the score to 35-34 but UHH came back with the last basket that put them ahead by three (37-34).

Hawaii Hilo led by as much as eight points in the fourth quarter (42-34), but the Eagles would fight to bring the game as close as a point twice. Once with 3:24 on the game clock, Jordan Rabe made two good free throws which brought the score to 46-45. The last was at 1:54, Radovic downed a free throw to make the score 48-47.

Seven scoreless possessions passed and time was dwindling down, which forced Biola to foul to keep the game alive. However, UHH would cash in and end up out-scoring BU 5-2 in the last 29 seconds.

Laila Walker led Biola's scoring effort, recording nine points. Thurman and Rabe were close behind her with eight. Rabe led the Eagles in rebounds, recording nine (eight defensive and one offensive).

Biola plays next against Hawaii Pacific on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 6:30pm PT at the Shark Tank.
