Biola Outlasts Concordia

The tension was high late in Wednesday’s contest but the Eagles of Biola held on for the victory over CUI.

LA MIRADA --- A big first half advantage helped the Eagles hang on for the victory on Wednesday afternoon. The BU women's water polo squad (5-8) took on Concordia (5-9) at SPLASH! and triumphed at home, 15-13.

Biola got rolling quickly, posting two goals on their first two possessions. Marija Mijuskovic took two shots and recorded two tallies, as BU jumped ahead.

Power plays ended the first and started the second for Biola, as the team added to its lead. Myah Ibarra cashed in with four seconds left in the first and then set up a goal in the first minute of the second stanza, as Maria Roldan Gonzalez pushed BU to a 4-1 edge.

A 4-0 run defined the second quarter for the Eagles, who entered the half with a 9-4 lead. The Eagles won the second stanza by a 6-3 margin with Roldan Gonzalez and Mijuskovic adding two goals apiece.

After the halftime break, CUI began to inch back. BU kept its distance but a 4-1 run for the Golden Eagles, gave the visitors a two-goal deficit with six and a half minutes remaining.

Lizzy Birch got BU back on the scoreboard with an excellent backhand shot. The highlight goal put BU ahead 13-10 but CUI was not done.

The visitors grabbed back-to-back scores and were down by one with three minutes on the clock.

Alicia Fregoso got the job done and held Concordia scoreless for nearly the entire final three minutes. Fregoso nabbed two saves, while Veralie Naranjo tallied a breakaway score with 17 seconds left to seal the victory.

A quick goal from Concordia did not faze the Eagles, as Fregoso responded with an open net goal to lock in the 15-13 finish.

The team battled through adversity beginning with injuries keeping typical starters, Ava LoBue and Rachel Spadt out of the pool. The team also went the majority of the fourth quarter without two more starters in Mijuskovic and Roldan Gonzalez after they received their third exclusions. The duo thrived beforehand though, combining for 12 points. Mijuskovic posted four goals with three helpers, while Roldan Gonzalez sank four shots with one assist.

Ibarra was an important cog in the BU offense, doing it all for the Eagles. The freshman stuffed the stat sheet with two goals, a team-high four assists, two drawn exclusions, and one steal.

Biola will be back in action at the Claremont Convergence beginning on Friday at the Zee Allred Aquatics Center against UC San Diego at 2:00 pm.
