BU Takes Rematch Against Titans

The Eagles survived on Sunday morning, defeating CSU Fullerton 12-11 in sudden death.

IRVINE, Calif. --- It was a thrilling end to the Barbara Kalbus Invitational for the Biola Eagles (4-8) on Sunday morning. The team faced off against CSU Fullerton (4-8), who defeated the Eagles just over a week ago. The contest went the distance but Biola was the team to overcome through overtime and sudden death for a 12-11 victory.

The game was in balance throughout the morning with neither team gaining more than a two-goal lead. The Titans moved ahead by two with three minutes remaining but Veralie Naranjo had the answer. The junior tacked on two scores in the waning minutes, knotting the game at 10 and forcing overtime.

In the first overtime period, CSUF found the back of the net to take control once again. BU looked for an equalizer but could not respond in the first overtime despite four power play chances.

The second overtime commenced and Naranjo stepped up. The first possession resulted in a Naranjo score and a 11-11 tied scoreline. The rest of the overtime went by uneventfully, moving the game to a sudden death period.

With the game on the line, Naranjo was the one to bring the win home. At the 1:50 mark in the period, Naranjo scored the golden goal, giving the BU squad the hard-earned victory.

Naranjo was unstoppable in the win, scoring seven goals to match her career-high. The Commerce, California native tallied her fourth game with at least five goals and moved her season total to 33 scores.

Damaris Kientz was active in the cage, corralling seven saves in the win. The BU keeper also added to the offense with a last second goal in the third quarter and an assist.

Marija Mijuskovic, Ava LoBue, Rachel Spadt, and Lizzy Birch joined the goal-scoring group with one apiece. Six Eagles dished out an assist on Sunday with Mattie Herzog leading the way with two.

The Eagles will return home for their next contest, taking on Concordia on Wednesday at 1:00 pm.
